Its a bugs life: Artist creates human sculpture from 20,000 handmade... By Suzannah Hills UPDATED: 22:29 GMT, 30 January 2012 From a distance it looks like a simple red sculpture of the female form. But artist Gabor Fulop hasn't used marble or paper-marche to create this piece of artwork called 'The Lady Bug' - and has in fact made up his model using 20,000 tiny ladybirds. Using artificial resin, the Bulgarian sculptor handmade the minuscule beetles, before painting them individually. The Lady Bug Sculpture: Hungarian artist Fulop Gabor used 20,000 hand-painted ladybirds to create this model of the female form He then applied the Ladybirds - 20,000 in total - to a model of the female form. He said: 'The work Ladybug resembles a goddess of nature, a fusion of both human and animal organisms, that is both a unique being and a mass of creatures that took a human form. 'My art works through a particular re-interpretation of the traditional techniques of sculpture. Creepy crawlies: The sculpture gives the illusion of ladybirds crawling all over a body

The Sumatran Orangutan Found only in Indonesia, its population has declined alarmingly mainly due to timber exploitation that destroys their habitat. 2. The only of its kind that has no hard shell, the Leatherback Turtle is found in the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. 3. Recent studies indicate there are only ~3,200 tigers in their natural habitat due to hunting and deforestation. 4. The Vaquita is a rare species of porpoise. 5. In October 2011, they became extinct in Vietnam. 6. With its meat used in the preparation of sushi, the fishing industry continues to harvest 60,000 tons each year. 7. A mother like no other Lisha, a Labrador, is world famous for her mothering skills even though she’s never birthed any pups of her own. The dog, who lives at Oudtshoorn’s Cango Wildlife Ranch in South Africa, has played surrogate mom to more than 30 animals, including cheetah and tiger cubs, potbelly pigs, a porcupine, a pygmy hippo, a weasel and a barn owl. Rob Hall, director of the wildlife refuge, says that Lisha domesticates the wild animals and serves as a bridge between them and humans. “They adjust more easily to her, and when they see that she trusts us, they are more at ease around us," he said. Hall and his wife, Nadine, said they noticed early on that regardless of the whether Lisha encountered a kitten or a baby hippo, she treated them all the same — like a child that needed a mother. "She would just walk up and lick the creature she was caring for. Check out some other photos of Lisha and her many "children." Photos: ZUMA Press

SOFEX: The Business of War - Part 1 | VICE News The Dillon Aero M134D Gatling Gun, a “six-barreled, electrically driven machine gun chambered in 7.62mm NATO that fires at a fixed rate of 3,000 shots per minute.” It was one of countless killing machines featured at SOFEX. Photo courtesy of Dillon Aero. “You know, it’s weird, man. It’s like everybody’s real cordial with each other. But, at the end of the day, we’re, like, buying weapons to destroy each other. On arriving at SOFEX, I was reminded of when I was a punk kid and it was fashionable to say things like, “The military-industrial complex is taking over the world.” SOFEX takes place every two years in Amman, and is largely the brainchild of Jordan’s king, Abdullah II, who has a penchant for special operations and massive displays of artillery. The Ultimate Warrior Competition is sponsored by KASOTC, a “counterterrorism training facility” in Jordan founded by King Abdullah. Every SOFEX commences with a “show of force” arranged by King Abdullah. Oh yeah, right. Lt.
