Free Online Business Management Training Course Certificate Program Storytelling with Data Feb. 28, 2013 This is a condensed version of my opening keynote at the Tapestry Conference, which was held yesterday in Nashville’s beautiful Union Station Hotel. I’m writing this from memory so at best it will only be an approximation of what I said. Thanks to all the organizers and attendees for a great event. Update: a video of my talk is now available on the Tapestry blog. Storytelling with data I was happy to see that the theme of this conference was storytelling, because as we develop new ways of gathering, processing, visualizing and presenting data, we sometimes risk focusing so much on techniques that we forget to tell stories. Storytelling is a basic human activity. Have an audience We naturally adjust our stories to fit our audience, but with graphics we don’t have that luxury. So whenever I look at a data set or try to build a graphic, I need to know who my audience is. I work at The New York Times, so the question is: Who is my audience? About Docracy Docracy is a home for contracts and other legal documents, socially curated by the communities that use them. Our mission is to make these documents freely available for everyone, while in the process making them easier to customize and use. No more shady templates behind a paywall where you click download and just hope for the best. Instead we offer reputable, transparent sources and social proof to help you find something as close as possible to the perfect document. The first version of Docracy was created at an all-night TechCrunch hackathon. It was started as a reaction to the problems Matt and John had finding reasonable documents when running their previous business.

Are stock prices affected by social media? - FTSE Global Markets According to a survey of 360 UK financial professionals carried out by Colt Technology Services, social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook are affecting share price volatility. The research found that 63% of respondents, including brokers and heads of trading desks, believe the valuation of individual stocks can be directly linked to public sentiment contained in social media channels. While only 7% of respondents regard social media sentiment as an important indicator, just under half (45%) of respondents regard it as a trailing indicator, demonstrating that social media definitely has a role to play. Firms such as hedge funds and proprietary trading houses are now able to scan social media data at random and then categorise messages into one of a range of public mood states. The firms then use algorithmic or high frequency trading strategies to place trade orders, enabling them to potentially steal a march on competitors who trade using more traditional forms of data.

University of Cambridge Language Centre To support language learning the Language Centre is making a range of its language learning resources available as open courseware under the Creative Commons Licence. Most of these resources were initially developed for the language courses run as part of the Cambridge University Language Programme (CULP). The materials were designed for use in a blended learning environment combining ICT-based learning with face-to-face learning in the classroom. The resources can be used for self-study but for their most effective use they will benefit from a learning environment with some face-to-face contact. We hope to make further resources available as open courseware in the near future. Licence The web-based applications are made available under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs 2.0 UK: England & Wales Licence. Donations In order to maintain and update its open courseware the Language Centre needs financial support. Requirements & Installation Requirements Server installation
