We have both always loved experimenting in our kitchens and our bathrooms, checking ingredients in products we love, isolating the main ones, and then trying them on their own. Sometimes it works: A favorite hair leave-in contained aloe, for example, so one day we tried aloe alone and found that, lo and behold, it worked just fine on its own.
Upcycled Journal From Book
Old Book + Recycled Paper = New Journal! As part of the Elmer's Holiday Memories Campaign* through Social Fabric, I had the opportunity to create an easy, affordable last minute holiday gift using my favorite Elmer's and X-ACTO products, and requiring only one quick stop at our local Walmart! With all the homework, music lessons, karate and dance classes, school performances, cookie exchanges and all the other holly jolly of the season, there's been little time to shop, let alone craft! So a one-stop-shop was an absolute must for my** handmade gift project, which was inspired by the Ordy & Joon post I had tacked to my "Crafty Inspirations" board on Pinterest earlier this year. I started with something most people have around their home -- an old book. If you don't have an old book in need of a makeover, Reader's Digests, like the ones I used here, can be picked up for a song in second-hand shops.

to make this cover you will need:*strips of varying widths with at least 16 inches in length.*2 rectangles of muslin cut out to 5 1/4 by 11inches*one long rectangle with the measurement of 25 by 11 inches*one button*one elastic hair band. first get you a boring looking composition book measure your composition book. mine was 10 in length and when i measured from one end of the cover to the other end, it turned out to be 15 inches in width. cut strips with at least 16 inches in length and i varied my widths because i wanted it to look a little wonky...you will want to make your strips come out to at least the width of 11 inches total when sewed together. sew your strips and press them flat with an iron.

My friends, if there ever was a bandwagon, this carefree DIYer is jumping right on it. For months, I’ve seen fabulous versions of the sunburst mirror pop up all over the blogosphere. And for weeks now, with every stop in the paint department, I couldn’t help but notice how those paint stir sticks might just make a very cool version of this decorative favorite. I couldn’t figure out how to stack them nicely enough around the center to make it worth my effort, but that little road bump didn’t stop me from snagging more than my fair share of free stir sticks at a time, like 8 or 10, over the course of a month. When I read how Danielle used an embroidery hoop, that convinced me to make my own version too! Those free stir sticks led to this latest creation:

Quilling, the coiling and shaping of narrow paper strips to create a design, has been around for years — hundreds, in fact. During the Renaissance, nuns and monks would roll gold-gilded paper remnants trimmed during the bookmaking process, and use them to decorate religious objects as an alternative to costly gold filigree. Quilling later became a pastime of 18th and 19th century young ladies in England, who would decorate tea caddies and pieces of furniture with paper filigree. The practice crossed the Atlantic with colonists, who added quilling to candle sconces and trays as home decorations. In all of that time, the process has remained very much the same, but quilling designs and specialty supplies have definitely caught up to the 21st century. Today some aficionados focus on making incredibly detailed 3-D figures, while others favor wall-sized museum installations.
