Mobile Photography Awards showcase stunning smartphone art That was taken with a phone? The winners of this year's Mobile Photography Awards may surprise you as you consider each was snapped with a smartphone. From detailed portraits from Alfred Pleyer to macro photography from Jim Mclaughlin to artistic representations from Aylin Argun, the winning selections are impressive regardless of the hardware (and software) involved. A record number of entries were received in this year's competition, demonstrating increasing interest in mobile photography as an art form. Thus far the winners of 20 categories have been announced, including the DPReview Connect category, which invited participants to share images that conveyed what the word "connect" means to them. Souichi Furusho of Japan won the category with his image titled "Image Pic #51."

2013 SONY World Photography Awards On Feb. 5, Sony announced the World Photography Awards shortlist of finalists in both professional and open categories. From over 120,000 submissions, this list of 43 images has been curated from submissions spanning 170 countries— a record number of entries to date. Astrid Merget, creative director of the World Photography Organisation, said. “The World Photography Organisation is dedicated to finding the best international contemporary photography from across the world. The shortlist is a clear indication of the exciting photography which is out there and, as we do every year, we are looking forward to presenting this collection of photographers to a global audience.”

Photo Booth April 16, 2014 Portfolio: Cathedrals of Ice This past February, thanks to an unusually cold winter, the sea caves along the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, in northern Wisconsin, were accessible by foot for the first time in five years. Visitors were able to walk two miles over the thick ice of Lake Superior to see the ice formations that run up the coastline. Erin Brethauer, a photographer living in North Carolina, visited the sea caves.
