Social Network User Demographics The share of adult Internet users who have a profile on an online social network site has more than quadrupled since 2005, from 8% to 35%, according to a November–December 2008 Pew Internet & American Life Project survey. Pew said adults still make up the bulk of social networking site users. But younger online adults were much more likely than their older counterparts to use social networks, with three-quarters of those ages 18 to 24 using the sites, compared with just 7% of Internet users ages 65 and older. While Pew measured adult Internet users who had created a profile on a social networking site, the potential audience for social networking is much larger if occasional visitors are included. “The ongoing headache for marketers is that social networking is such a powerful consumer activity, but incredibly challenging as a marketing medium,” said Debra Aho Williamson, senior analyst at eMarketer.

Younger generation can't live without Internet - Research - The study, from New Paradigm, has found that 77% of the net generation could live without television but could not live without Internet access. Youths in China are the most resistant to giving up the Internet with 87% choosing to be online rather than on the couch. Surprisingly 77% of youths in the United States prefer the Internet; that is the same as the global average. Researchers from Edison Media found very similar results in a recent study. What both of these reports indicate is that marketers not working to grow a global online audience will lag behind the advertisers who are growing their online brand. One clear example of this trend can be seen in the way mobile phones are beginning to take on tasks consumers traditionally did over their computers. Web and Social Networking Use in Latin America The number of Internet users in Latin America and Puerto Rico is growing quickly, because of affordable computers, more broadband availability and interest in applications such as social networking. Those are the main findings of a study conducted by Pyramid Research for Google and cited in The Miami Herald. Pyramid projected the regional residential base of Internet users would reach 160 million in five years, up from 100 million in 2009. Although e-mail and Web surfing are popular with Latin American Web users, as they are in other regions, social networking is especially prevalent. “A lot of people in Latin America use the Internet just to be part of a social network,” said Alexandre Hohagen, Google’s managing director for Latin America, in a statement. A separate study conducted in September 2008 by comScore World Metrix confirmed the Pyramid/Google findings.
