Google Buys Jambool: Social Networking Battle Begins Google has purchased virtual currency platform Jambool, a move that will fuel Google's reported foray into the social networking world. Jambool's Chief Executive Vikas Gupta and Chief Technology Officer Reza Hussein confirmed the deal Friday on the company's website. "We are excited to announce that Jambool is becoming a part of the Google family today," the founders write. They add, "The game has only just begun." Jambool started up in 2006 and a year later shifted its focus toward social networking sites by creating a virtual currency platform called Social Gold. Facebook's Rival Service Jambool's main competitor is Facebook Credits, Facebook's own virtual currency platform. Jambool CEO Vikas Gupta recently had some harsh words for Facebook Credits in an interview with Inside Social Games. Social gaming has begun a multibillion-dollar industry. 7 percent of users that make a virtual goods purchase are still buying them after four months. Buying Spree

Gamification is More Than Just Fun and Games Gaming is hot. And according to research reports, it’s poised to get hotter. According to Nielsen, games are the second most frequent Internet activity for Americans after social networks -- more popular than email -- with Americans spending an estimated 906 million hours per month on social networks, 407 million on games, and 329 million on e-mail.M2 Research reports that the market for gamification will grow to $1.6 billion in 2015, from $100 million in 2011.And Gartner contends that by 2015, more than 50% of organizations that manage innovation processes will gamify those processes, and that by 2014, a gamified service for consumer goods marketing and customer retention will become as important as Facebook, eBay or Amazon with more than 70% percent of Global 2000 organizations having at least one gamified application. These findings have great implications for brands in terms of how they can/should fit gamification most effectively into their loyalty marketing strategies. 1. 2. 3.

Business Insider Research LinkedIn hiring solutions revenue More and more, we are seeing the emergence of "vertical" professional social networks: networks dedicated to a specific type of occupation with specialized tools. Here are two examples: Academic networks. Are these a threat to LinkedIn, the biggest, and more generalist, professional social network? As we argued in our study of network effects, generalist networks can be undermined by more focused vertical upstarts. In the short-to-medium term: no. That being said, it is a big missed opportunity, because it shows that LinkedIn can't become a platform. Building platforms seems to be a "DNA thing." LinkedIn is often referred to as a "professional" or "grown-up" Facebook, but that misses a crucial difference.
