Birdsong and human speech turn out to be controlled by the same genes A rose-ringed parakeet rests on a power line in July in the Israeli Mediterranean coastal city of Netanya. (Jack Guez/AFP/Getty Images New research on the bird genome has revealed that the same genes that give humans the ability to speak give birds the ability to sing. Because of this similarity, researchers will be able to use birds as lab subjects to better understand how speech evolved. Duke University neuroscientist Erich Jarvis led a study on birdsong and speech published Thursday in Science. "I've always been interested in how the brain controls complex behaviors, and I became most interested in speech," Jarvis said. But birds fit the bill. Because the way birds learn to sing specific song patterns seems to mimic the way humans learn to form words (even some of the brain regions involved are known to be the same), Jarvis and his colleagues hoped that similar genes would be involved in the process, too. untitled Drinking water is essential to a healthy life. But, drinking water from a copper cup can benefit the body even more. It is believed that drinking out of copper cups has antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties. There are benefits of drinking water that has been stored in copper pots. A study that was done in 2012 that found that storing contaminated water in copper pots for up to 16 hours at room temperature reduces the presence of harmful microbes. That has people believing that copper can be the solution to the purification of drinking water, especially in developing countries. Fight Dirt and Dead Pixels There are lots of roads to ruined pictures. Dirt and sensor defects are two of them. How can you uncover and solve these problems? Naturally I’ll be talking here about “easy-to-fix” problems, not the cases where the camera falls and breaks. For those the solution is simple, though not easy: visit a repairman, or the dump. These easy-to-fix problems are dust specks on the lens or sensor, and dead pixels in the sensor. Dust Is Everywhere The largest amount of dust settles on the camera lens’s front lens, which is constantly exposed to external influences when you take pictures. If you use a camera with exchangeable lenses, then you will almost certainly eventually get dust on the rear part of your lens, and on the sensor too. The reason for removing dust from time to time is problems like the one visible in this picture: Canon 5D Mark II, Canon EF 16-35/2.8 II, 1/80 s, F8, ISO 100, focus 16 mm If you don’t see the dust yet, here it is one more time, labeled: Testing Without the Sky Hot Pixels

5 Ancient Legends About the Secret of Immortality Chasing down the ancient world’s alchemical obsession with obtaining the Philospher’s Stone: the secret of immortality Mortality has tormented our consciousness since the first human witnessed death and realized his or her own eventual demise. The inevitability of death and speculation upon the nature of afterlife has always been an object of obsession for mystics and philosophers. In mythologies around the world, humans who achieve immortality are often regarded as gods, or as possessing god-like qualities. Lingzhi Mushroom (Via Wikimedia Commons) 1. Chinese alchemists spent centuries formulating elixirs of life. As early as 475 BCE, Chinese texts reference the Mushroom of Immortality, a key ingredient in the elixir of life. Though there are no historical accounts of someone actually achieving immortality from a Lingzhi mushroom, various species are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to this day. PASM Modes: Get Your Camera under Control | Zonerama Magazine Among beginning photographers’ most frequently asked questions is: “How should I turn that little wheel?” In today’s article, we’ll answer exactly that question. You’ll learn how each mode works, when to use the P, A, S, and M modes, and what goals each mode serves best. Every DSLR has PASM modes, and they’re also found on mirrorless cameras and the more advanced compacts (especially the most advanced ones). P – Program This is a semi-automatic mode that is very similar to full-automatic mode—it’s the “programmed automatic” mode. The full (green) automatic mode uses the camera’s judgment for practically everything, and it doesn’t always get things right. You can work in P mode almost the same as you’d work in fully automatic mode. S (Tv) – Shutter Priority Another semi-automatic mode. Time priority is also often used in combination with an external flash. The long exposure time has left part of this photo blurred, emphasizing motion. Motion frozen thanks to a fast shutter. M – Manual

The Chaining of Saturn/Sol « Author Elva Thompson In the beginning was the Golden Age, when men of their own accord, without threat of punishment, without laws, maintained good faith and did what was right….The earth itself, without compulsion, untouched by the hoe, unfurrowed by any share, produced all things spontaneously….it was a season of everlasting spring. Ovid in the sixth book of his Metamorphoses. The Golden Age of Sol/Saturn Saturn/Sol In antiquity Saturn was our sun… and we lived in Paradise, the Golden Age of Man. Hesiod tells of a golden race of immortal men who lived in the time of Kronos when he was reigning in heaven. ‘And they lived like gods without sorrow of heart, remote and free from toil: miserable age rested not on them . . . David Talbott in the Saturn Myth, p.329 writes: ‘Ancient races the world over record that there was once a Golden Age, a kingdom of cosmic harmony ruled by a central light god. What happened to Saturn? From a God to a Devil As above, so below. Pan To hell in a hand basket. Eve’s apple The Farm

How to Use Exposure Modes | Zonerama Magazine A camera’s built-in light meter measures the level of incident light and adjusts aperture, shutter speed, and ISO based on that. Your exposure mode setting determines how your camera will work with the light levels that it measures. Depending on the mode, the camera will either adjustments fully automatically, or leave you a certain amount of control over a photo’s final tonality. Exposure Modes Your choice of exposure mode determines how much of the decision on exposure settings (aperture, shutter, ISO) is left to the camera logic. The mode dial on an amateur DSLR (left) contains a wide range of automatic scene modes. Generally when starting out as a photographer, you can’t tell what settings a certain scene demands or what aperture/shutter/ISO will best fit your goals. That’s the time to stop using automatic modes and—most likely—start using the semi-automatic (creative) modes. Automatic Modes The most basic automatic mode is full automatic mode. Automatic modes on Canon DSLRs.

Magical thinking Magical thinking is the attribution of causal relationships between actions and events which cannot be justified by reason and observation. In religion, folk religion, and superstitious beliefs, the correlation posited is often between religious ritual, prayer, sacrifice, or the observance of a taboo, and an expected benefit or recompense. In clinical psychology, magical thinking can cause a patient to experience fear of performing certain acts or having certain thoughts because of an assumed correlation between doing so and threatening calamities. Magical thinking may lead people to believe that their thoughts by themselves can bring about effects in the world or that thinking something corresponds with doing it.[1] It is a type of causal reasoning or causal fallacy that looks for meaningful relationships of grouped phenomena (coincidence) between acts and events. 4 big reasons you look fat in photographs. | The Haute Girl Update: You know how you read buzz feed or something like that and there is this really shocking title, but when you go to read it its nothing about what you thought it was going to be? and it ticks you off? Well this article is not like that, but the title is like that for a reason. It’s what brought you to read this today. I had some unsavory comments about people not liking that I used the word fat, or upset that I would use this word in a negative context. So to give you a little background, I have been a professional photographer for 8 years. So as many of you know, if you have been following this blog, that this is my own journey to loving myself and finding a way to encourage other women to love their bodies through fashion. The funny part about that is, anyone can look photogenic or un-photogenic depending on who is taking the photo of them. This experiment with the blog has been an exciting revelation as to why I believed I couldn’t take good pictures ( in front of the camera.)

Spinal cord Structure[edit] Diagram of the spinal cord showing segments The spinal cord is the main pathway for information connecting the brain and peripheral nervous system. The length of the spinal cord is much shorter than the length of the vertebral column. The human spinal cord extends from the foramen magnum and continues through to the conus medullaris near the second lumbar vertebra, terminating in a fibrous extension known as the filum terminale. It is about 45 cm (18 in) long in men and around 43 cm (17 in) in women, ovoid-shaped, and is enlarged in the cervical and lumbar regions. In cross-section, the peripheral region of the cord contains neuronal white matter tracts containing sensory and motor neurons. The spinal cord has a shape that is compressed dorso-ventrally, giving it an elliptical shape. Spinal cord segments[edit] The human spinal cord is divided into 31 different segments. Within the CNS, nerve cell bodies are generally organized into functional clusters, called nuclei.
