Collaboration (renamed "Communication" in UML2) Diagrams are an alternative presentation of a sequence diagram. They tend to be more compact, but harder to read, than the equivalent sequence diagrams. The example at left is identical in meaning to the Sequence-Diagram example at the end of the previous section. The boxes are objects. The object name typically goes inside the box, but can go outside the box when different collaborators refer to it by different names. Use the following qualifiers on names: Usually, the instance name (or reference through which the instance is accessed) is the same as the role the instance plays in the collaboration. Messages that flow from one object to another are drawn next to the line, with an arrow indicating direction. Guards are specified using the "Object Constraint Language," a pseudo-code that's part of the UML specification.
