Il décède le 5 juillet 2011 à Rome. En 1950, une bourse d’études lui permet de poursuivre sa formation à l’Art Students League de New York, où il a pour professeurs Will Barnett, Morris Kantor et Vaclav Vytlacil. En 1951, Cy Twombly passe l’année universitaire au Black Mountain College, en Caroline du Nord. En 1952, Cy Twombly descend jusqu’à Key West, en Floride, et de là, se rend à Cuba. Il expose en janvier 1956 à la Stable Gallery.
