English to French, Italian, German & Spanish Dictionary Introduction to Coordinate Graphing Introduce elementary students to coordinate graphing through seasonal coloring activities. The fall Jack-O-Lantern activity requires students to use the grid code and crayons or markers to create a jack-o-lantern on a blank 9x9 grid. The use of letters on the horizontal axis and numbers on the vertical axis introduces young students to coordinate pairs without the confusion of the standard (h,v) format. Notice that it is important that elementary students become accustomed to listing the horizontal coordinate first as this will transfer to the Cartesian coordinates they will use in later grades. 5 of My Favorite English Games for ESL Students I saved the best for last. My students requested this game more often than any other game we ever played. It's based on the old drinking game "Ring of Fire," modified for the classroom. Materials needed:A standard deck of playing cards, a whiteboard, 20-30 small slips of blank paper, and a bowl. The setup:Almost none! The activity:Before you start the game, hand every student two small slips of paper. The students will take turns pulling a card. Here are the actions I assign to cards and the penalties involved: K: Ask anyone. Q: Ask a girl. J: Ask a boy. 10: Ask your teacher! 9: Bunny ears! 8: Words. 7: Pick again. 6: Touch your nose! 5: Answer one question. 4: Ask the person on your left. 3: Ask the person on your right. 2: Answer two questions. A: Free card. Note: This is just an example of a setup I use for intermediate university level classes.
Speakingactivities Frustrerad ställer jag en fråga i facebookgruppen Engelska för år 6-9 där jag söker råd och hjälp kring hur andra brukar göra med grupper som inte vill eller vågar tala engelska. Tycka vad man vill om sociala medier, men att under en dag kunna diskutera problemet med lärare som är spridda över hela Sverige tycker jag är fantastiskt. I gruppen finns också deltagare från Finland och Norge. Råd och tips strömmar in och många känner igen i sig problemet. Vi konstaterar att det kan ha många orsaker som till exempel att de inte har ett tillräckligt stort ordförråd för att kunna uttrycka sig, att de inte är vana vid att tala engelska lektionstid och att något i gruppdynamiken gör att de inte vågar. Många väldigt goda ideér strömmade in i gruppen och nedan har jag försökt kategorisera och sammanställa gruppens råd. When you want to get your students to speak up, try one of these fun and simple games to get them talking in class. 1This is How We RollYou can use this simple game as a get to know you at the start of school or later as a get to know you better activity. All you need is one standard die and six questions – either ice breakers or ones that elicit opinions, experience or other personal thoughts. Speaking doesn’t have to be forced or boring when it comes to ESL class.
The Plot The Plot The Plot Question time! What is it that you think they wanted? What do you think is in the barrels? Which mouse is in charge? If the mice could talk, what would they be saying? Perfect picture! Can you draw a picture of one of the mice doing something extraordinary? Story starter! They had been in the barn for ages. Outfits ready, equipment set, plan made, they were almost ready to leave. They knew what they wanted, and were determined to get it. Sentence challenge! Can you write a sentence that uses an apostrophe for omission? E.g. cannot = can’t I have = I’ve he will= he’ll she is= she’s we have= we’ve will not = won’t He can not see anything. I have never been so excited! He will never be the leader. She was always complaining. We will not give you a piece of cheese! We have never seen a mouse wearing clothes before. Sick sentences! These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. The mouse had fur and eyes.
