Snow Dragon’s helicopter lifts 52 to safety A helicopter from the Chinese icebreaker Snow Dragon picks up the first batch of passengers from stranded Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy as a rescue operation gets underway in the Antarctic yesterday. The helicopter mission to rescue the 52 passengers on the research ship trapped in the ice since Christmas Eve finally succeeded after a number of false starts and failed icebreaking attempts.

My wife Deb and I, and our colleague John Tierney, visited UVM several years ago and wrote about it in our American Futures series, notably with John’s piece about the school’s emergence as a “public Ivy.” Seven Days, the financially-and-journalistically successful weekly based in Burlington (which I’ve also written about), has a story about today’s commencement, here. The gold-encrusted hallways, marble foyers, and imposing granite frontage are not from Versailles, or the Vatican, or even Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. They are from the newly completed corporate headquarters of state-owned Harbin Pharmaceutical, in northeast China. No word on exactly how much the literally palatial offices cost to construct, but the mind boggles. One prominent journalist from Chinese state TV severely criticized the company for its garish use of funds, explicitly comparing it to the Palace of Versailles, but some netizens posting online defended the monument as a natural expression of China’s prosperity: What happened…?
