What a powerful feeling it ignites in us, right? However, the reality of how much time we have to spend grading sets in quickly and the task becomes more and more monotonous. No teacher digs grading the same problems, essay prompts, responses, etc. over and over again, but it is a large part of what we do on a daily basis. So, why not make it meaningful? Teachers who use rubrics: set clear guidelines and expectations from the outset of the school year. hold students accountable for the work they produce in a justifiable way. let their students know on which areas they need concentrate the next time they are given a similar task. see improvement in their students’ work. Teachers who do not use rubrics: Be consistent. Still not convinced?

Genius Hour - Scaffolding for those who can't settle - The 6L Team- So introducing Genius Hour has been an absolute hit in my class. The kids are getting right into it! The level of flow and collaboration in the classroom is simply amazing! However, Genius Hour has been a bit messy in the first few sessions (I've read that this is to be expected!). For some kids Genius Hour has been a hard concept to grasp. The freedom to choose to look into something became too much for some students and they had trouble settling on a topic. Assessing creativity with critical thinking The other day as I showed one of the new Common Core ELA aligned presentation rubrics soon to be published by the Buck Institute for Education (it'll be in the FreeBIEs section) to a few colleagues I noticed a somewhat strong reaction to the word "creativity" being included in one of the sections. To be clear, this rubric is meant to assess a demonstration in project based learning that falls in the category of communication but the word creative shows up in the above standard "presentation aids" section. While the list of potential 21st Century Skills developed by various groups and organizations can be overwhelming many like to focus on the four C's (critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity). While I have argued for inclusion of compassion in a previous blog entry I think it's worth exploring the intersection of critical thinking and creativity and consider merging them for assessment purposes.

Formative Assessment Is Transformational! I think formative assessment is one of the single most important things that teachers can do -- and already do -- for their students. In fact, great teachers use formative assessment whether or not they know it. Formative assessment may not be new, but it certainly has begun to crystallize into particular elements and components that are currently in the spotlight. @Westylish's Blog: The Impact of Personalised Video Feedback on Sixth Form Hi... This year I have been working on videoing the feedback that I am giving to my sixth form students. My AS class produced an essay on the extent to which Hitler's consolidation of power was achieved in a legal manner. I then videod the feedback and the students used the feedback to improve their original draft using DIRT. Initial reactions suggested that this method was a very effective way of disseminating feedback with the student voice being very positive and the DIRT showing that the students had made real progress towards their targets. Looking at what the students produced in their books and what they thought about the activity only got me so far.
