20 obsolete English words that should make a comeback Photo: Katherine Hodgson If we all start using them, these words can be resurrected. DURING MY UNDERGRADUATE studies as a Linguistics major, one of the things that struck me most is the amazing fluidity of language. New words are created; older words go out of style. Words can change meaning over time, vowel sounds shift, consonants are lost or added and one word becomes another. The following words have sadly disappeared from modern English, but it’s easy to see how they could be incorporated into everyday conversation. Words are from Erin McKean’s two-volume series: Weird and Wonderful Words and Totally Weird and Wonderful Words. 1. Verb trans. – “To confuse, jumble” – First of all this word is just fun to say in its various forms. 2. 3. Verb trans. – “To scrape together; to gather together from various sources” – I’m sure this wasn’t the original meaning of the word, but when I read the definition I immediately thought of copy-pasting. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.

Others include story lines about baking humans in ovens, and a child waking up screaming after thousands of fire ants made a nest in the subject's brain. "I was absolutely distressed," Center City PCS CEO Beverley Wheeler told WUSA. After the station broke the story in a previous report, the school responded with the following statement: "Thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. Wheeler later said that the unnamed teacher downloaded the assignment off the HomeschoolingParadise.com website instead of using the materials provided in the school for the 20 required homework problems. These aren't the only math problems to garner national outrage. "Each tree had 56 oranges. The teacher eventually resigned.

REWIRED The Galactic Blasters Gun Shop (by @baekdal) #design Written by Thomas Baekdal | Thursday, March 24, 2011 Ever since reading "The Hitchhicker's Guide to the Galaxy" I have always wanted to own my very own Kill-o-Zap. For those who do not know what that is, here is how it is generally described. The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat about the bush. I haven't actually found one yet, but earlier today I did come across Dr. What about this "Unnatural Selector - ray blunderbuss." What about a 17 inch F.M.O.M. ...or what about the "Righteous Bison Indivisible Particle Smasher?". Follow: 42Concepts Grand Illusions - Articles - Harry Eng Bottle This is a Harry Eng bottle. Harry liked to make people think. And during his lifetime he is supposed to have made around 600 of these 'impossible bottles.' Which have certainly made a lot of people think. The nylon rope is threaded through the pack of cards, tied into a tight knot, then threaded through a wooden ball, and then tied into another tight knot - all inside the bottle! How did the pack of cards get into the bottle? Knots were one of his trademarks - every bottle will have a knot inside it. We do know that Harry Eng invented a special vice which could be taken apart, put inside a bottle, and then assembled INSIDE the bottle. It has certainly made us think!
