Color-Coding Your World: Knotch Is Like Yelp, But for Everything | Wired Business Knotch founders Anda Gansca (left) and Stephanie Volftsun Photo: Knotch We might like to post on Facebook or Twitter about how much we loathe Comcast and love Game of Thrones, but marketers love when we express our opinions online even more. For them, our sentiments and preferences translate into advertising gold. But to get our data, marketers run up against two problems. Knotch is an iOS app that catalogs opinions — your own, your friends’ and random internet strangers’ — on movies, politics, restaurants, TV shows, businesses, the weather, and any other topic you can imagine. A Knotch profile But what makes Knotch arguably unique in the crowded world of opinion-funneling apps — as if there’s a shortage of places to express your opinions on the internet! “We wanted to create an international scale that people can understand no matter their language or culture,” says Gansca. As users feed more data into the app, trends could begin to pop up for topics and brands.
Social Influencers Who Are Changing The World Through Twitter When the news of the school shooting in Newtown, Conn., unfolded across social networks and a host of online news sites, Pat Mitchell took to Twitter. Mitchell’s tweets were not the only calls to action that day, but she does have a deep insight into the influence social media has for sparking debate and raising awareness. As president and CEO of the Paley Center for Media, Mitchell has made it a big part of her business to recognize and celebrate the transformative muscle of social media to connect activists on every platform. Since she took the helm in 2006, Mitchell’s worked hard to morph the institution formerly known as Museum of Television and Radio into a productive hive of current programming and collaborations that’s moving the needle on women’s issues. Good thing she’s no stranger to breaking down barriers. Still, Mitchell believes there’s plenty more to be done. “Social media is really good at mobilizing action,” she says. So what’s next? The infographic below, created by Online MBA, breaks down the demographics, including education level, income, age and gender of social media users, along with other miscellaneous facts. Some sites' users are more demographically alike than others. Social media sites are also seeing a gender split — women use social media more than men. Women gravitate toward Pinterest and young, techie men hang out on Google+. LinkedIn reports an even ratio of men and women — 49% over age 45 — who use the site to connect with other business professionals. Most people use social media to stay in touch with friends and family, and more are doing so while on the go. Check out the infographic below to see all the statistics. Disruptions: How Driverless Cars Could Reshape Cities Jeff Swensen for The New York TimesA self-driving car at Carnegie Mellon. Researchers have been contemplating how cities could change if our cars start driving for us, including having narrower streets because parking spots might not be necessary. SAN FRANCISCO — By now, seeing one of Google’s experimental, driverless cars zipping down Silicon Valley’s Highway 101, or parking itself on a San Francisco street, is not all that unusual. Indeed, as automakers like Audi, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz make plans for self-driving vehicles, it is only a matter of time before such cars become a big part of the great American traffic jam. The short answer is “a lot.” A test of Google’s self-driving car. Inner-city parking lots could become parks. Mr. E-mail: bilton@nytimes.com
