Study: It doesn't pay to be smart If you're so smart, why aren't you rich? Although money and mental muscles may seem a natural match, brains, alas, may be more hindrance than help when it comes to getting rich, concludes a new study in the journal Intelligence. "It is still not well understood why some people are rich and others are poor," writes study author Jay Zagorsky of Ohio State University. "Luck, timing, parents, choice of spouse and many other factors play important roles in shaping an individual's circumstances," he acknowledges in his study, which looks for a link between intelligence scores, wages and wealth. Past analyses have mostly just looked at income, with studies of World War II veterans finding a link between smarts and a better salary. But what good is it to be smart and have a better salary if you end up broke or spending it all on credit card bills? The answer is no. And when it comes to financial distress, smarts are no help at all. So much for smarts. Share this story:

PersonalDNA | Your True Self Revealed - Fast Fun Free Personality Tests How Design Thinking Could Help Solve the Skills Gap | Education on GOOD This story is the final in a six part editorial series exploring the balance between student learning and job skills. We're asking leaders and thinkers in education and technology fields: Can America educate its way out of the skills gap? This series is brought to you by GOOD, with support from Apollo Group. What if I were to tell you that you could learn more about how to solve the skills gap from a dating site than from a quantitative international study? As a systems designer at IDEO, I'm always looking for innovative ways to go about understanding and framing problems. The first technique is using analogous illustrations as a source for critical problem solving. Lessons can surely be learned from dating sites and their methods for creating natural matches in a very impersonal environment, from master chefs working with limited ingredients to create diverse dishes, from parents picking a baby sitter for the first or second time, or from voters picking a presidential candidate.
