10+ Resources for Learning About the Math and Science of Sports As regular readers of this blog know, I am a proponent of getting kids involved in physical activities like bicycling, skiing, and playing team sports. I also like to see connections made between students' interest in sports and lessons in the classroom. The resources below can all be used to create lessons connected to students' interests in sports. The Science of NFL Football is a series of ten videos from NBC Learn explaining and demonstrating math and science concepts as they relate to football. The list of topics covered in the Science of NFL Football includes Torque & Center of Mass, Pythagorean Theorem, Geometric Shapes, Projectile Motion & Parabolas, Vectors, Kinematics, Nutrition, and Newton's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Laws of Motion. In addition to the NFL Football lessons, NBC Learn offers lessons on golf, skiing, skating, swimming, and running. Physics World offers three video lessons on the science of cycling, swimming, and running.
Tablettes tactiles et mathématiques Mise en situation problème, pour « manipuler » les courbes de fonctions polynômes de degré 2. Vincent Bernigole, professeur au lycée Descartes d’Antony (92), expérimente l’usage pédagogique des tablettes tactiles en cours de mathématiques. Du 15 mai à la fin juin 2013, dix-huit tablettes iPad ont été prêtées au lycée Descartes pour mettre en place une expérimentation de l’utilisation de ces tablettes en mathématiques. Pour cela, l’application TI-Nspire™ a été installée sur les tablettes. Plusieurs séances ont été organisées avec plusieurs scénarii possibles : classe entière avec une tablette pour deux élèves, demi-groupes avec quelques tablettes pour projection des résultats avec un vidéo projecteur, petits groupes d’accompagnement personnalisé avec une tablette par élève. La Web radio : une façon branchée de travailler l’oral au secondaire Un vrai public et l’usage des TIC pour parfaire son oral, il fallait y penser ! Retour sur la présentation de l’enseignant Sébastien Verbert lors du dernier Sommet de l’ipad et du numérique en éducation. S’il y a un volet où les technologies numériques peuvent contribuer à améliorer concrètement et efficacement la performance des élèves, c’est bien à l’oral. Sébastien Verbert, enseignant au Collège La Malassise, à Longuenesse, en France, est venu partager son expérience de Web radio lors de la 3e édition du Sommet de l’iPad et du numérique en éducation, qui s’est tenue les 30 avril et 1er mai dernier à Montréal. Dans la vraie vie, son projet, novateur et audacieux, attire maintenant près de 7000 auditeurs en France qui suivent les propos d’élèves motivés et engagés, émis en direct sur le Web, deux à trois fois par semaine. How to Get Your School Announcements to as Many People as Possible I was recently introducing some teachers to blogging when one of them said, "but they don't even read our newsletter." She was right, most of the parents and students probably are not reading the newsletter that the school sends out. My suggestion was to create a blog. I made the suggestion knowing full well that many parents wouldn't visit it directly on a consistent basis. I suggested maintaining a blog because from it you can launch a variety of outreach strategies to connect with parents and students. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Creating a system for getting your message out to parents and students will take you a little time to develop. Math Hack: How To Subtract By Adding As much as nowadays we all have easy access to calculators on our phones, sometimes in life when we are forced to put to the test the basic math skills we learned in school. Whether during a test or when our phone dies, sooner or later we will have to do mental math such as subtracting 245,871 from 785,412. When trying to subtract large numbers in our heads, sometimes things just get really confusing and that’s why the YouTube channel MinutePhysics decided to teach a simple method to do subtractions of large numbers by adding, which makes things a whole lot easier for us. The main idea is use the smaller number and subtract every digit from 9, except for the last digit, which will be subtracted from 10. The resulting number is 754,129 to which we ADD the bigger number we mentioned which is 785412. 785412 + 754129 = 1539541 After cutting out the first digit, the final result is 539541.
