Living la Pura Vida in Costa Rica A phrase that literally translates to Pure Life or Full of Life, “Pura Vida” is used in countless situations and can be seen to embody the Costa Rican approach to living. The pace of life in Costa Rica is relaxed, and locals, who affectionately refer to themselves as “Ticos,” place a high value on time with family and friends. United Nations Volunteers UN Volunteers directly mobilizes up to 8,000 volunteers every year. Eight out of ten UN Volunteers come from developing countries themselves. Every year, up to 8,000 qualified and experienced women and men of some 160 different nationalities volunteer at least six months of their lives to help others. Being a UN Volunteer is not a career (you are currently limited to eight years of service); it is also not an entry route to the United Nations (you can apply to UN positions as an external candidate, but are expected to complete your UNV assignment).
