Free IELTS Exam Links Online Free IELTS Test Alien Tongues: Developing Language Learning Strategies Overview | In this lesson, student develop and practice the use of syntax, connotation, context clues and other language learning strategies by exploring made-up languages like Na’vi, the language created for the new James Cameron movie, “Avatar,” and Klingon, from “Star Trek.” Materials | Computers with Internet connection, projector. Warm-Up | Pair up students and assign half the pairs to be in Group A and the other half in Group B. Give the pairs in Group A a copy of Lewis Carroll’s “Jabberwocky” and Group B, a passage of Corandic, a made-up language used to explore how we understand language. Explain that these are passages in “nonsense” languages, and that their task is to try to decipher and interpret the one they have received. After students have tried to interpret their passage, go around and share their translations. Ask: How were you able to construe meaning despite the unfamiliar vocabulary?
