What's so compelling about geothermal technology? Geothermal Basics The heart of a typical geothermal system is a ground-source heat pump that cycles water through an underground piping loop. While this equipment may sound exotic, its operation is fairly easy to understand when compared to that of conventional air-to-air heat pumps. Below about 10 degrees Fahrenheit, however, too little heat is present in the air and a backup heat source is needed to make up the difference, or, in many cases, take over entirely. Hobbit Houses: 15 Grassy Hill-Shaped Dwellings “In a hole in a ground lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing to sit on or eat: It was a hobbit hole and that means comfort.” This line by J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the beloved The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings fantasy novels, has inspired hundreds of copycat underground hobbit homes around the world – and is itself inspired by ancient Viking hill houses. These 15 green-roofed dwellings that take a page right out of Tolkien’s books come in all sizes for all kinds of functions, from hotels in New Zealand to backyard playhouses and vintage underground hill-dug duplexes. Hand Cut Double Dovetail Experiment - by Woodhacker After admiring the double and double-double dovetail joints that are capable with the Incra and other jigs, I started thinking, “Why not try this by hand?” So this box is my first experiment with handcut double dovetails. It took me some time to figure out the joinery process, but once I realized a few things about this type of joint, it seemed do-able. It was quite challenging but also a ton of fun. It also does take some degree of patience and precision…which I’m still working on. In this blog, I’m focusing on the sides of the box, but here’s a few pictures of the nearly completed box - Materials.For this box’s sides I used three types of primary contrasting woods, although there is no real reason to do so. The picture below shows the rabbet joint cut on each end of each side – I set the rabbet depth at 1/8” and cut it on my router table. Below is a top-view picture of the pieces in relation to each other once they become integral to the box. The close-up below shows in more detail.
Ball Jar Lights I’ve been wanting to do this for a year. It’s one of those things I’ve just been putting off. I love ball canning jars, especially the blue ones. The first thing you have to do to make the Ball jar lights, is take out the glass seal. So I took the hammer and busted up the seal to get it out. Once the seal was out, I marked the center of the lid. And used the drill bit and a hammer to poke a hole where the mark was. Then we started drilling. It only took a few seconds since the lid is so thin. I bought 2 recessed light converters years ago from Lowe’s (I think). This is what the shade originally looked like. I thought these little round bulbs would look the best with the ball jar lights. Then I just screwed the jar onto the lid. I love how it looks. I made one for over the sink too. I know these have been done all over the place, but it’s something I’ve been wanting to do forever and I’m glad I finally did. And a side note: I’ve always wondered how high lights should be hung over an island.

The Kirgiz yurt with bent-wood roof poles and crown and a domed overall shape. The two tiered yurt with a pointed roof and two layers of wall section placed one on top of the other. The Mongol or Kalmuk ger with straight roof poles, a heavy timber crown, often supported by two upright poles, and fitted with a wooden door. This proven design is equally well suited to the many uses for moveable dwellings in this country. Figure 1.

They are usually quite simple and strict but there are some exceptions. For example in Scandinavian bedrooms you often can see one wall covered with spectacular wallpaper while other walls are painted in one color. Usually this wall is right behind the bed. This simple but effective solution allows you to maintain the visual size of the bedroom, create an unusual wall that always pop out, draw some attention to a bedspread and decorative pillows, and save some money. Step into my backyard office pod When I was young, I was fascinated by "Growing Pains" dad Jason Seaver’s work-at-home setup. I loved that in between appointments with patients in his home office, the good doctor could pop into the family kitchen and hang with Mike, Carol, Ben and the gang while mom Maggie was out working as a reporter. What could be better, right? Now, as an adult who primarily works from home with the exception of meetings, events, and occasional respite at a local coffee shop, the work-where-you-live concept that I found so novel in "Growing Pains" has, well, worn off a bit. For those who similarly don’t mind working and living in the same place but have space issues, here’s an interesting concept: the Archipod, a spherical prefab “garden office” measuring 9’10” in diameter that appears to be one part traditional English garden shed and one part cedar singled space pod straight out of "Lost in Space."
