Although being aware of the book, by the first time I read it I had already had 10 years of experience and roughly 700 mescaline journeys, always done in shamanic setting, and was rather looking for faults in Huxley’s writing. We should look at psychedelics as powerful tools for studying the inner world of man, just as the telescope is used as an instrument to study stars. So what is a psychedelic experience? Well, for certain, it is not contained in the words describing it. The validation of this experience is a personal quest and a solitary journey, even when taken together with others. Is the psychedelic experience real? Yes.

The historic drug paraphernalia was found alongside 7lbs of other gold items when an area of land was dug up in Russia to make way for power lines. They items had been buried in a stone chamber before being concealed by a thick layer of clay. Criminologists have since carried out tests which indicate that the thick, black residue found inside the vessels comes from the cannabis and opium which the tribal royal smoked. Experts believe the items belonged to the Scythians, a nomadic warrior race who ruled large swathes of Europe and Asia between the 9th century BC and the 4th century AD. It means the so-called bongs could be some of the oldest in existence. Famed Greek historian Herodotus, who died in 425BC, wrote: ‘Scythians used a plant to produce smoke that no Grecian vapour-bath can surpass which made them shout aloud.’

It then has a high potential to escalate into a violent exchange, although due to their diminished capacity, it doesn’t end up that violent at all. So much damage is thankfully avoided. Exposure to the therapeutic sector will show us how addictive alcohol is. It lowers our IQ. It ruins people’s lives, or better put, people allow it to ruin their lives. But that’s just one side of the story, so let me be clear: there’s nothing inherently wrong with getting drunk. Unfortunately though, a strong proportion of society’s use of it is not at a respectable level. That goes for all types altered states as well. For example, Marijuana is a much better substance for an angry, disconnected and ego-based society. The medicinal benefits are now finally being publicly realized. Nevertheless, the powers that govern have strictly restricted how we can legitimately explore our minds.
