Dear Silicon Valley Fashion Week, Where’s the New?

Dear Silicon Valley Fashion Week, Where’s the New?
Photo: Eli Zaturankski When you throw an event called Silicon Valley Fashion Week?, even with the question mark at the end, there are going to be expectations. We’re going to want to see Silicon Valley’s definition of fashion. We’re going to want to see how the tech industry will reimagine the things we put on our bodies. We’re going to want to see how we’ll all dress in the future. I approached the first two nights of the three night event feeling both snotty and skeptical—I spent a decade covering the fashion industry’s traditional fashion weeks, so go ahead, show me fashion—but also hopeful. Save up to $335 on your auto insurance Desjardins Insurance Sponsored The second night was more fashion-y, you could say, in that the focus was more on clothes. Overall the event seemed designed to provoke outsiders and entertain insiders. Naomi Watts Really Loves This Snake Necklace One of the many perks of being a Bulgari spokesperson, is getting to wear some of the most amazing and expensive jewelry out there — and Naomi Watts certainly takes advantage of it. And while she most likely has her pick of the precious pot, the 46-year-old’s favorite seems to be the serpent necklace that she’s been spotted wearing time and time again. But while in the past, she’s opted for the diamond-encrusted serpent, at an event for Bulgari at tis year’s Cannes Film Festival, she instead opted for a gold version. She paired the statement piece with a simple black dress and pulled back hair, letting it do the talking.

Jerry Seinfeld's Kids Are All Grown Up While Posing for Family Holiday Card Happy holidays from the Seinfeld family. As many Americans travel across the country for Christmas and Hanukkah, Jerry Seinfeld and his wife Jessica Seinfeld headed to the snowy mountains for a winter getaway. When not hitting the slopes or relaxing by the fire, the Hollywood couple gathered their kids and dogs together for a family photo. What came next was one pretty special holiday card. "And for one half of a second, they stopped fighting. I am about to lose it," Jessica captioned the family memory.

Solar Panel Bags, Jackets That Hold Laptops, Drone Mannequins, & More from Silicon Valley Fashion Week Photography by Eli Zaturankski As someone who returned to San Francisco after years of covering fashion weeks around the world for Vogue, I was intrigued when my editor came calling with the request to report on Silicon Valley Fashion Week. First of all, it’s not really a week at all (more like three days), but what could we possibly expect to see?

Here's Why Girl Meets World's Rowan Blanchard Was Never Your Traditional Disney Star Frazer Harrison/Getty Images If there's one Disney Channel star ready to take on the world, it may just be Rowan Blanchard. For three seasons, the actress was the heart and soul of Girl Meets World thanks to her friendship with Maya Hart (Sabrina Carpenter) and family bond with Cory and Topanga Mathews (Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel). But after E!

Sasha Fierce! Sasha Pivovarova’s 23 Best Runway Moments (Versace Spring 2010, Photo: Maria Valentino) Sasha Pivovarova’s beauty is a given, but it’s her intensity on the runway that made her a star. Since debuting on Prada’s Fall catwalk back in 2005, Pivovarova has made a name for herself by playing up the spooky side of her alien looks and putting those wide eyes and sunken cheekbones to good use in theatrical shows for the biggest names in fashion. Though she’s malleable enough to take on any character a designer can dream up, Pivovarova is at her best when she’s playing peculiar for iconoclasts like John Galliano or Alexander McQueen.

Lupita Nyong’o Loves a Flowy Dress Moment Lupita Nyong’o has only been a staple on step-and-repeats for a couple of short years, but the actress brings endless charm to what could be a dull and repetitive gig. Her fashions are always interesting, from her red Ralph Lauren cape moment to that pirate-inspired Prada ensemble she wore to the 2014 Met Ball. But it’s her seemingly favorite silhouette, a deep V-neck dress with full pleated skirt, that’s pure magic. Every time she’s worn this similarly cut kind of dress, she’s twirled and whirled the flimsy fabric to the delight of photographers and the Internet’s enthusiastic meme makers alike. For her Oscars debut, the Best Supporting Actress winner wore a custom light blue silk Prada gown that reminded her of Nairobi. With a diamond Fred Leighton headband, the look — and her theatrics — gave off major Cinderella vibes.

Why New Mom Janet Jackson Needs Her Privacy More Than Most Janet Jackson was born to be famous. She might not have known it for a few years, but when she entered this world in 1966, she was joining a legendary musical dynasty in progress. The Jackson 5—featuring brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and then 6-year-old Michael Jackson, had already formed as The Jackson Brothers in 1964, and buoyed by their success, at 10 years of age Janet was entertaining America with her siblings on their TV variety show The Jacksons. But while the brothers would ultimately come in a distant second-through-fifth to the supremely talented Michael, and she was the youngest of nine children overall, it soon became clear that Janet Jackson was going to be a force to be reckoned with on her own. Janet also kicked off the acting portion of her career on the classic 1970s-era series Good Times and appeared on Different Strokes and Fame in the 1980s. And the rest is history.

Celebs Are Being Paid Lots of Money to Wear Jewels That Are Worth Lots of Money It’s no secret that the Cannes Film Festival (where glitz rules and high heels are reportedly mandatory on the red carpet), is a major marketing opportunity for luxury brands. In fact, jeweler Chopard thought the film festival was so key to its strategy, it apparently wrote checks totaling over $1 million to ensure that 11 stars, like Julianne Moore and Lupita Nyong’o, would wear the company’s baubles during the festivities. Yes, if you’re an A-List, of-the-moment actress or model, a company will loan you diamonds or emeralds worth hundreds of thousands of dollars and pay you six figures for the pleasure of “collaborating” on the event. So common is the practice of paying stars to don jewels during awards season, “7/10 of the nominees and presenters are paid for at least one or more of the items they are wearing [on the] red carpet,” says Matthew Berritt, Director at EVINS Communications, a leading luxury PR firm, based in New York.

How Dior’s Dior So Real Sunglasses Became a Street-Style Sensation (photo: Getty Images) As with any sweeping trend, this one started with Rihanna. During the Fall 2014 shows, the pop songstress’ first true show season tour de force, Rih arrived at the Dior presentation in Paris in a showstopping slipdress paired with thigh-high stockings, dripping diamond jewelry, and donning a red furry coat to match her crimson lipstick. It was a look that caused a minor Internet riot, though while many freaked over her sultry style, the element of her outfit that really took off was the Dior So Real mirrored sunglasses perched on her visage. The reflective and bridgeless specs became an overnight sensation. Editors bought them, bloggers styled them, and Rihanna fans at home coveted them.
