What The ‘New Heart of Wall Street’ Looks Like « Data Center Knowledge The cages housing customer equipment inside an Equinix data center. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. The New York Times devoted more than 3,000 words Sunday to a feature story on the rise of high-speed trading operations. But the Times offered no visuals of any of the facilities housing the servers supporting the surge in electronic trading. The photo above provides a look at the inside of a data center operated by Equinix, the company that runs the “New York Four” facility in Secaucus described by the Times as a “vast technological sanctum.” “While this ‘Tron’ landscape is dominated by the titans of Wall Street, it affects nearly everyone who owns shares of stock or mutual funds, or who has a stake in a pension fund or works for a public company,” The Times writes. Cluster of NJ Financial Data Centers The Secaucus data center houses the server infrastructure for Direct Edge and other electronic stock exchanges.

Thrift Toothpaste Package Design by GUO Lili In Case Of Emergency Cut Toothpaste! I thought I was being a miser, but in all honesty I cut open the end of my toothpaste tube to get to the last wee bit of paste. Call it conservation or being stingy but that’s what I do. So I totally identify with the Thrift Toothpaste package design and hope someone like Colagte or Crest adopt it! It will save me the trouble of hunting for scissors…I’ll just tear open the rear end! Scirra.com - Home of Construct, the free open-source game creator Bees Solve Complex Problems Faster Than Supercomputers In a new study, researchers report that bumblebees were able to figure out the most efficient routes among several computer-controlled "flowers," quickly solving a complex problem that even stumps supercomputers. We already know bees are pretty good at facial recognition, and researchers have shown they can also be effective air-quality monitors. Bumblebees can solve the classic "traveling salesman" problem, which keeps supercomputers busy for days. They learn to fly the shortest possible route between flowers even if they find the flowers in a different order, according to a new British study. The traveling salesman problem is a problem in computer science; it involves finding the shortest possible route between cities, visiting each city only once. Bees need lots of energy to fly, so they seek the most efficient route among networks of hundreds of flowers using angles of sunlight, which helps them find their way home, researchers say.

Pay per click Pay per click (PPC) (also called cost per click) is an internet advertising model used to direct traffic to websites, in which advertisers pay the publisher (typically a website owner) when the ad is clicked. It is defined simply as “the amount spent to get an advertisement clicked.”[1] In contrast to the generalized portal, which seeks to drive a high volume of traffic to one site, PPC implements the so-called affiliate model, which provides purchase opportunities wherever people may be surfing. It does this by offering financial incentives (in the form of a percentage of revenue) to affiliated partner sites. Websites that utilize PPC ads will display an advertisement when a keyword query matches an advertiser's keyword list, or when a content site displays relevant content. The PPC advertising model is open to abuse through click fraud, although Google and others have implemented automated systems[3] to guard against abusive clicks by competitors or corrupt web developers.[4]

Designer: AHHA Project Sculptris 10 Unbelievable, Unlikely Animal Friendships Friends and enemies in the animal world tend to be pretty clear-cut -- there are some species that just weren't born to get along. But as these unlikely pairs show, even Mother Nature doesn't set things in stone: Who says that orangutans and tigers, dogs and deer, cats and birds can't all be friends somehow? From a sheep that brought a baby elephant out of a deep depression to natural enemies that snuggle down together for every nap, these 10 heart-wrenching relationships are incredible and unforgettable. Take this macaque, for example, who, according to The Daily News, was rescued from Neilingding Island in China after his mother abandoned him and left him for dead: His recovery was dragging until he made friends with this pigeon, and now the two are rarely apart. map of visitor locations - zoom map Statistics updated 13 Apr 2014@08:10GMT: 17,584 visits [?]Count is updated every 24 hours, but map updates are deliberately different, as explained in Notes and FAQ. Total since 10 Jul 2009: 1,350,613. Previous 24hrs: 955. The map shows individual visits to the web site shown at the top of the page, clustered within a given distance. The location of each visit is based on the IP address of the computer used, one IP address per visitor per 24-hour period. No personally identifiable information is ever obtained or stored in order to place a 'dot on the map' [see Privacy statement]. Update frequency: The statistics for counting and the map udpates happen at different times. Our counters have proven to be extremely accurate and reliable over several years, but different counters work differently (e.g. some count hits rather than visits, and some count multiple pages or define a 'visit' differently). See FAQ for additional explanations.
