Mobile phone users 'wasting nearly £5bn a year' | Technology UK mobile phone users are wasting a total of nearly £5bn a year because they are on the wrong contracts, according to a report. The overspend figure equates to almost half their spending every year on their mobile phone, or an average of £195, compared with an average spend of £439 annually. Just over three quarters (76%) of people on monthly deals are paying too much, having signed up to tariffs after wrongly estimating how many minutes and text messages they use. The study by Billmonitor, an Ofcom approved bill-analysis service, analysed millions of transactions from thousands of bills. But it points to the scale of the challenge for subscribers hoping to get the right contract, noting that there are more than 8.5m potential mobile tariffs available. In general it says that overspending falls into three categories: 29% of those on the wrong contract are on too small a tariff, wasting money on "out of allowance" calls,

Madlibs For Pitches: How To Perfect The One Sentence Pitch You’re the founder of a fledgling startup locked in a room with angel investor Ron Conway for exactly 30 seconds, what do you say? If you’re like most entrepreneurs, you fumble for the words to succinctly describe your startup in a sentence or two. That seems simple enough, what could go wrong in under a minute? According to the Founder Institute’s Adeo Ressi: a lot. When it comes to the one sentence pitch, Ressi says “Most entrepreneurs manage to screw it up… How much better would the world be if every startup could explain their business well in one sentence?” To help entrepreneurs perfect the art of the micro pitch, he’s created a rudimentary template in Mad Libs style: My company, __(insert name of company)__, is developing __(a defined offering)__ to help __(a defined audience)__ __(solve a problem)__ with __(secret sauce)__. According to Ressi, “most entrepreneurs add useless adjectives, define their audience too vaguely and have a weak value proposition with no secret sauce.”

What comes after "the year of mobile" After the year of mobile, many are wondering what will come next. iMediaConnection turned to one of 2010's Mobile Women to Watch, Joy Liuzzo, for answers. A senior director at InsightExpress and a speaker at the upcoming iMedia Breakthrough Summit, Liuzzo is, quite simply, a mobile expert. Check out what she has to say about what lies ahead. iMediaConnection: What is the most surprising thing people are using their cell phones for? Joy Liuzzo: I hate to be the jaded person in the room, but I don't think we're seeing much that is surprising us lately. iMedia: Where will consumers draw the line in terms of brands having access to them on their cell phones? Liuzzo: Consumers are more open minded to brands and advertising on their mobile when it is in a public setting, such as the mobile internet or an application. iMedia: Which demographic is growing fastest in terms of mobile use? Liuzzo: We're starting to see kids around 11-13 years old increasingly have a mobile phone.

365 Days, $10 Million, 3 Rounds, 2 Companies, All With 5 Magic Slides Editor’s note: The following is a guest post by Socialcast founder Tim Young detailing how he raised 3 rounds totaling $10M in VC money in a year’s time with a 5-slide deck. This was originally published at “Knowledge Is Social.” “I have a short five-slide deck to share that provides a solid framework for understanding our business.” Since moving to San Francisco a little over a year ago, I have spent every day helping to build Socialcast and about.me. During this time, I have raised more than $10 million combined over 3 funding rounds for both Socialcast and about.me. Convincing venture capitalists to invest in two startups in less than 365 days was a challenging task, but one that quickly taught me the dos and don’ts of raising money. 10 Mobile Trends for 2011 In its annual mobile technology report, Forrester Research has outlined the trends it expects to see in the coming year. Technologies like 4G and LTE, Near Field Communication (NFC), barcodes and augmented reality will see increasing amounts of hype in 2011, and the use of mobile/social/location combinations will soar, the report says. But for companies, the goal should now be on developing mobile business cases and strategies, and not jumping on the bandwagons surrounding these types of disruptions. These technologies - LTE, NFC and mobile AR - will take years to emerge, says Forrester. Strategy needs to come before technology. 2010 Trends Continue Forrester's 2011 report began by analyzing its performance on last's year's predictions. While those still hold true, says Forrester, new trends for 2011 are emerging. To summarize, the trends are as follows: 1) Mobile/Social/Local Combinations will Explode but will Generate Little Revenue 2) 2011 is the Year of the "Dumb" Smartphone User
