Maker Monday: Rebuilding rich soil with HugelKultur Maker Monday is about people pioneering ways to produce locally. Here’s something I wrote last year, but I wanted to share with all of my new friends on resilientcommunities.com. Reclaiming Dead Soil We have a problem. Most of the land we live on (even in rural communities) is barren. Dead. A home or community with dead soil, won’t help you survive an economic winter or supply disruptions. It’s a technique called Hugelkultur . It’s from a brilliant German permaculture (a way of designing living ecosystems to eliminate the need for external inputs) engineer called Sepp Holzer, although he started doing this well before the permaculture brand emerged. What is it? Here’s a picture that provides a nice overview of the technique: HugelKultur in a Nutshell The goal here is soil so alive and self sufficient that it doesn’t require fertilizer, mechanical tilling, or much water. The rotting of the wood warms the soil (increasing growing times), fertilizes the soil, and keeps the soil moist.

You can check out our past content on our new blog page.) When set up properly, factory blade guards are easy to use and offer another level of protection for the operator. Frustration with factory table saw blade guards is uncomfortably common today. Making sure that the splitter/riving knife itself is flat is important. Naturally, the truth about factory blade guard / splitter assemblies lies somewhere closer to the middle of the road. Splitter/Riving Knife Setup The splitter/riving knife must be centered on the blade, not "cheated" to one side or the other. Though designed to work differently, the splitter and riving knives are aligned the same way. On most saws the blade guard and anti-kickback pawls are mounted directly to the splitter plate which in turn mounts the whole assembly to the saw. First, be sure that the splitter/riving knife is flat.

Tarp That Catches Rain Water For Drinking | SHTF Survival Tips 0StumbleUpon 0Reddit 0Tumblr Unlike other sources of water common in the wild, rainwater is inherently clean and a good option for refilling a water bottle, especially if you don’t have a water purification system on hand. However, collecting water with narrow-mouthed bottles or hydration bladders can be difficult and ineffective. The Glider seeks to make rainwater collection easier with a dual-function design. Not only does the tarp provide shelter from the rain, it funnels that rain into a gutter system and bottles it, providing a hassle-free way of procuring clean drinking water. View all Unlike other sources of water common in the wild, rainwater is inherently clean and a good option for refilling a water bottle, especially if you don't have a water purification system on hand. The Glider seeks to make rainwater collection easier with a dual-function design. The amount of water that the Glider system will collect obviously depends upon how much rain is falling. Another interesting feature of the Glider is that it's made from a new Cordura-based "Amphibiskin" fabric that includes both waterproofing and heat reflective coating. On the downside, the Kammok will prove most useful in places like the Pacific Northwest where rain is abundant, along with other water sources like streams and rivers. Share

Professional Vinyl Stencils for Door and Window Shops, Sandblast Artisans, Decorative Painters and Designers, Concrete Specialists | ProStencil.com How To Make A Glowstick Alarm | Survivor Medic I learned to make something similar to this back when I was still in the Marine Corps and was reminded of it after seeing a video a few months ago where one of these was made with a mousetrap. I couldn’t think of a reason to make one at the time, but who needs a reason? The purpose of this device is to warn you when someone crosses your perimeter. I started by painting the rat trap OD green because, as everyone knows, painting it this color makes it 40% more awesome. Pull your lines through the holes in the trap as shown here. The completed trap should look something like this. Here’s a short video of the trap being activated in the dark. [youtube=
