What Does The Future Hold For The Internet of Things? The Internet of Things (IoT) is already here in the sensors, devices, data and cloud infrastructure that connects the already numerous smart devices around us. However the opportunities for an increasingly smart, interconnected world are unprecedented and as billions of devices around the world become interlinked and begin to talk to each other, the wealth of data produced will help us to understand, control and manage better our homes, health, factories and even cities. At the Internet of Things Summit in Boston, attendees will discover cutting-edge technologies on the horizon from the world’s leading innovators in IoT, sensors, big data, open data, connectivity and M2M. The event, taking place at the Hyatt Regency Boston on 28-29 May 2015, will showcase the opportunities of emerging trends in IoT and its’ impact on business & society. Learn about the latest technological advancements and trends in IoT from a global line-up of experts.Key topics to be discussed at the summit include:

How the Internet of Things will Recreate Privacy | Big Data Tech Law Backstages are back. Before it has even fully emerged from its multitude of wombs, the Internet of Things (IoT) has been hard at work creating new worlds of privacy faster than pronouncements of privacy’s death can be posted. The backstage, that place in which we used to create ourselves before we began living out loud and letting our every waking and sleeping moment be surveilled, not only won the Oscar for Best Picture; the President just created a comic secret sharer of his backstage related to his list that rhymes with bucket list. How, exactly, will the IoT contribute to the rebirth of the backstage? As networks of things grow and develop deeper and deeper network connections, they become swarms of elements that are generally little and on their way to becoming even smaller.
What is the IoT platform of the future? From LiveWorx, CBR went to discover what to expect from an IoT platform in the future. Boston is these days host to LiveWorx 2015, the IoT event that joined together over 2,000 IoT experts from around the world. During the conference, PTC unveiled an update to the ThingWorx IoT Platform with the sixth version enabling customers to scale and secure solutions. At the same time, Howard Heppelmann, GM at PTC launched the ThingWorx Converge IoT offering that leverages the ThingWorx platform for connectivity, device management and rapid application development. But questions remained from Tuesday's event, and CBR went to investigate what to expect from an IoT platform. The main function of an IoT platform is connectivity, according to Dave Hart from ThingWorx. The CTO added that data management needs to be part of an IoT solution which needs to be able to process "massive amounts of data". He said: "Monitoring and controlling devices is important." "Together, these will lead to new revenue streams."
Mining the Internet of Things for new insights I’m attending Internet of Things World in San Francisco, California this week—one of my favorite cities, behind my native Boston, Massachusetts, of course. I love to embed local happenings into my talks, and in thinking about Internet of Things World, the gold rush seems obvious. On January 24, 1848, James Marshall found a piece of shiny metal in the tailrace of a lumber mill—and so began the California gold rush. Of course, information traveled at a very different pace back then. What’s the parallel impact with the Internet of Things? As we converge on San Francisco some 167 years after that first shiny piece of metal was found, Internet of Things participants—businesses, government agencies and suppliers—should all take pause and consider how history may judge this point in time. Or, will we be like the more than 50 percent of gold miners who only captured a modest profit and the cities and towns that were abandoned as the gold became scarce?
Honeywell, I’m Home! The Internet of Things and the New Domestic Landscape Justin McGuirk In 1972, as part of MoMA’s exhibition “Italy: The New Domestic Landscape,” the Radical Design group Superstudio installed a small cubic room with mirrored walls that appeared to replicate itself into infinity. The group’s proposal, submitted to the curator Emilio Ambasz, had taken the form of a one-page statement describing exactly how this “microenvironment” should be installed, followed by a further nine typed pages of theoretical exposition by Superstudio’s cofounder Adolfo Natalini. In those nine pages—a manifesto of sorts, veering off into prose poems and short stories—Natalini outlines a new way of living. It is only too easy to root around in the archives, extract something highly selective, and proclaim this or that radical to have been prophetic. The effects of the network age on urban life in the early twenty-first century are roughly as Natalini predicted, if less utopian. Most significantly, what we think of as “domestic space” is being completely redefined.
