Steve Pinker's hair and the muscles of worms : Pharyngula I’ve been guilty of teaching bean-bag genetics this semester. Bean-bag genetics treats individuals as a bag of irrelevant shape containing a collection of alleles (the “beans”) that are sorted and disseminated by the rules of Mendel, and at its worst, assigns one trait to one allele; it’s highly unrealistic. In my defense, it was necessary — first-year students struggle enough with the basic logic of elementary transmission genetics without adding great complications — and of course, in some contexts, such as population genetics, it is a useful simplification. It’s just anathema to anyone more interested in the physiological and developmental side of genetics. The heart of the problem is that it ignores the issue of translating genotype into phenotype. And the “one gene, one trait” model violates everything we do know about the phenotype and genotype. Here’s the problem: you can’t always reliably predict the phenotype from the genotype. How can this be? See the big red question mark?

power to choose “Be miserable. Or motivate yourself. Whatever has to be done, it’s always your choice.” ~Wayne Dyer When I was 12 years old I got back from a weekend at my aunt’s house with my mom. The experience shut me down. Apparently he was too proud to get a pacemaker. My oldest sister was on her honeymoon. I felt like I had to be the strong one because I was the man of the house now. Things were not well, though. I rarely even spoke about it with anyone. I thought I was okay with it, but I was damaged. I realized somewhere in my late 20s that it affected me. I tended to lean towards the negative. It impacted my ability to express emotions because I’d decided that being strong meant holding them in. I managed to make it to the age of 29 without having my heart broken; in fact, I was only 5 months away from 30 when it happened. The abandonment aspect was hardest part. Some time later I reconnected with someone I dated briefly in college. I was so afraid that I constantly needed validation.

cab ride i'll never forget “Great moments often catch us unawares….” By Kent Nerburn There was a time in my life twenty years ago when I was driving a cab for a living. It was a cowboy’s life, a gambler’s life, a life for someone who wanted no boss, constant movement and the thrill of a dice roll every time a new passenger got into the cab. What I didn’t count on when I took the job was that it was also a ministry. Because I drove the night shift, my cab became a rolling confessional. We were like strangers on a train, the passengers and I, hurtling through the night, revealing intimacies we would never have dreamed of sharing during the brighter light of day. And none of those lives touched me more than that of a woman I picked up late on a warm August night. I was responding to a call from a small brick fourplex in a quiet part of town. When I arrived at the address, the building was dark except for a single light in a ground-floor window. So I walked to the door and knocked. After a long pause, the door opened.
