FT Alphaville
- The week in four charts, via Fast FT. And what’s coming next week. Read more Larry Summers was interviewed by Chrystia Freeland at the INET conference in Toronto last week, in a conversation that very usefully expanded upon his thoughts about secular stagnation. (H/T Interfluidity) It’s a reassuring interview for us because so many of the statements he made echo what we (and other bloggers such as Steve Randy Waldman) have been saying for some time.

Toodledo Competitors Competitors Neptune An online task manager using GTD principles. How Similar is Neptune to Toodledo? Trade of the Day: Chevron Corporation (CVX) Stocks traded impetuously in a narrow range on Monday without much help from the news wires, the economic calendar or earnings reports. Big-cap technology was the only major group that finished with sizeable gains, while almost everything else languished. The big event later this week will be a meeting of the Federal Reserve’s rate-setting committee.

Gadgets Apps Hacks: Creating a Reminder Service with Google Apps Script Google Calendar is great for reminding you of appointments. But if you have actions that must be done, you need something more than a one time reminder. I wanted to keep a list of actions with due dates where each day I would receive one email listing all the actions which were coming due, or overdue. Let's destroy Flash together - whitespace Adobe Flash is obsolete. It is a proprietary technology controlled by a single company, it has hundreds of gaping security holes, it drains battery like crazy, it is not supported anymore on mobile devices (Apple, Google and Microsoft) and Linux. Even Adobe themselves think that Flash should die; let’s help them to weed the garden! Quite a few people are still relying on Flash for publishing dynamic content. One of their reasons is, apparently, the possibility of code protection (1, 2, 3, 4, etc.)

Cargo Cargo offers its members free standing personal websites with their own URL*,a wide variety of templates, and simple but sophisticated tools to control the way their content is displayed. run X11 application on synology DS210j (I think this is a big engineer and may be useful for many people, so i post it in English) (Cause English is not my naive language, hope you can understand what i mean) Before start, make sure the packages list in this site have been installed The most packages can be found in ipkg except for gtk+ and vte In previous post, i have manually compiled the gtk into my machine(Sorry, I write it in chinese. maybe I will re-post it in Eng if i have time) (Now the translation is completed. Feel free to look it.) So, now I can directly execute gtk-demo and get this message "ElvisStation:~> gtk-demo (gtk-demo:28569): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:"

Cloud services for Windows 8 and Windows Phone: Windows Live, reimagined - Building Windows 8 We have talked quite a bit about SkyDrive and using your Microsoft account for the sign-in and roaming capabilities of Windows 8. These are just two aspects of a broad service infrastructure that you can tap into when using Windows 8 (and Windows Phone, Xbox LIVE, and a host of other services and apps). We want to talk more about the capabilities and features of cloud services for Windows 8 and Windows Phone. To get started, Chris Jones, the VP of our Windows Live group responsible for the development and operations of all of the services and apps, authored this post to introduce the reimagined role of cloud services in Windows 8. --Steven Windows Live was first announced on November 1st, 2005, and in our press release we described it as “a set of personal Internet services and software designed to bring together in one place all of the relationships, information and interests people care about most, with more safety and security features across their PC, devices and the Web.”

How to run X11 apps on the Mac If you’ve ever thought about running Unix programs on your Mac, you might have assumed that meant you were stuck with the command-line interface. But you aren’t. Go to Leopard’s Applications: Utilities folder and double-click on X11.app. Gtk+ 3.2 Runs Any Gtk+ Application in a Browser I've been ragging on GNOME a little bit lately, so let's balance things out by talking about something I found quite fascinating: the Gtk+ HTML back-end. This will enable you to run any Gtk+-application inside Firefox 4.0 (only Firefox 4.0 is supported at the moment). It's far from complete at this point, and as such, it'll be part of Gtk+ 3.2. Gtk+ 3.0 introduced support for multiple back-ends, and this new HTML5 gdk back-end makes use of that feature. After compiling Gtk+ with –enable-x11-backend –enable-broadway-backend, you're almost good to go. The second step is to enable web sockets in Firefox 4.0.

GTD & Kanban: Similarities, Differences & Synergies Between The Two Let's Work Together In this article in the “GTD & Personal Kanban Series” we will explore the why? behind bringing GTD & Personal Kanban together. What is Getting Things Done (GTD)? GTD emerged as a highly effective and popular personal productivity approach in the early two thousands. The approach consists of a five stage process, a workflow to guide that process and a couple of techniques for handling choice around what to do at any given moment, what should be progressed as soon as possible or someday/maybe, and also, how to handle life and work’s various horizons – from now at this moment, all the way through to what is important to you in life as a whole.
