Science Matters Yah, I know some of us are winding down from schooling for the summer months, but I can’t help but stay on the lookout for resources I know I’m going to be needing again all too soon. I’ve come across some interesting science things of late that I want to check out – perhaps you, too, can find something useful. For your perusal: Free Online Textbooks and Curriculum Chemistry Packets: 13 units of chemistry; also has links to YouTube chemistry videos Classic Science Life: free life science e-textbook to download; either download by chapter (there are 36) or by unit (9 units); online courses also offered

Practical Chemistry This website is for teachers of chemistry in schools and colleges. It is a collection of experiments that demonstrate a wide range of chemical concepts and processes. Some of the experiments can be used as starting-points for investigations or for enhancement activities. Many have links to carefully selected further reading and all include information and guidance for technicians. Chemistry is a practical science.

Practical Physics This website is for teachers of physics in schools and colleges. It is a collection of experiments that demonstrate a wide range of physical concepts and processes. Some of the experiments can be used as starting-points for investigations or for enhancement activities. Science Science Clips Definitely one not to be missed! Fabulous interactive Flash science activities for primary-aged children matched to curriculum requirements throughout the UK. Organic Nomenclature The nomenclature of substituted benzene ring compounds is less systematic than that of the alkanes, alkenes and alkynes. A few mono-substituted compounds are named by using a group name as a prefix to "benzene", as shown by the combined names listed below. A majority of these compounds, however, are referred to by singular names that are unique. There is no simple alternative to memorization in mastering these names. Two commonly encountered substituent groups that incorporate a benzene ring are phenyl, abbreviated Ph-, and benzyl, abbreviated Bn-. These are shown here with examples of their use.

50 EdTech Resources You May Have Missed-Treasure Chest Jan 23 2011 Welcome to this week’s Treasure Chest of 50 EdTech Resources You May Have Missed. I try to post some of the more interesting topics and resources that I’ve come across during the past week. This week, I’m in a bit of a fun-loving mood so let’s start off with this site and see if you can do it! Do Nothing for 2 Minutes I hope you enjoy! ALEX Lesson Plan: Let's Get SCIENTIFIC with Numbers! Engage Introduce students to various ways very large and very small numbers are used in the world. For example, how many miles is the Earth from the sun; what is the thickness of a red blood cell; estimate the growth rate of your hair per day; what is the net worth of Bill Gates? Ask students for other examples. Have students enter a large number on their calculators (ex. 36,000,000,000,000) and then press 'enter' or '='.

HyperPhysics Concepts About HyperPhysics Rationale for Development HyperPhysics is an exploration environment for concepts in physics which employs concept maps and other linking strategies to facilitate smooth navigation.
