The iPlant Collaborative: Empowering a New Plant Biology

GIS and Mapping Resources « Writing for Nature I love maps. Maps tell convoluted stories in a seemingly simple, clean interface that belies the effort and planning that goes into constructing an understandable map. The one below is one I drew after working for several months in this particular portion of Ecuador, but it is only one of the many, many ways the area could be represented. Sketch Map of the region around Pucara in Intag, Ecuador During graduate school I was the TA for several courses where map making was one of the essential skills being taught, both old school with a compass and your stride length, and with the newer GIS methods. A good map, to me, is a work of art, it is something that you want to look at because it is interesting and beautiful on its own visual merits. This page has a partial list of some good mapping and GIS resources. The Weather and Climate page also has some GIS links. Keep in mind that within the US each state has a publicly accessible GIS clearing house, as do more and more cities. Hey What’s That?

NOVA | Rosalind Franklin's Legacy Posted 04.22.03 NOVA When it comes to her place in the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA, Rosalind Franklin has not received fair treatment. Or so maintains Lynne Osman Elkin, a professor of biological sciences at California State University, Hayward, who spends much of her time these days trying to clarify Franklin's significant role in one of the 20th century's greatest scientific achievements. With all she did to make Watson and Crick's discovery possible, Rosalind Franklin was essentially "a de facto collaborator," says Lynne Osman Elkin. Within reach NOVA: How close did Franklin actually come to deciphering the structure of DNA? Elkin: She was very close. The other thing was base-pairing, which was Watson's brilliant idea, made possible by chemical information supplied by Jerry Donohue. How soon might she have worked it out if Watson and Crick hadn't gotten her data? Well, at one time Crick estimated that it would have taken her three months. Picture perfect No. Oh, sure.

HYPOTrace — Phytomorph The seedling hypocotyl (juvenile stem) is controlled by many endogenous and environmental factors important to plant growth and development. Therefore, its length and shape is measured in many different experimental scenarios, e.g. studies of photoreceptor function and hormonal signaling. HYPOTrace was developed in response to the need for a more automated and accurate method that could replace commonplace manual methods of making measurements from electronic images. The HYPOTrace software is available for download and demonstrated in a video tutorial. Encyclopedia of Earth EvoLiteracy – Biology and Science Videos | Evolution Literacy The videos and animations below (180+) follow the chronological order of biology and science topics discussed in my courses for college Biology Majors (each video-/animation-link is connected to additional resources, including weblinks to visuals and/or relevant platforms). I have compiled this information with my BioHonors students, I thank them much for their commitment, support and enthusiasm. Note that, with time, some of the links below might change, I will try to update them as much as possible, but if visitors have observations, suggestions or think that alternative or additional links should be included here, please provide that information in the “comments” section at the end of this page — GPC.
