WeatherBill Raises $42 Million Google Ventures and Khosla Ventures have led a $42 million financing round in WeatherBill, a San Francisco start-up that insures farmers against extreme weather conditions that can cripple crop production. Founded by Google alumni, the four-year-old WeatherBill runs computer simulations to predict the likelihood of extreme weather in any location at any time and charges farmers accordingly. “We provide protection to farmers of unexpected weather primarily caused by extremes of rainfall or temperature, something we’re seeing more of because of climate change,” said David Friedberg, WeatherBill’s chief executive, citing the recent floods in Australia and drought in China. “By getting a guarantee on what one might make on an acre of farming, farmers can feel more comfortable about making investments in their operations,” Mr. “Recently we’ve been very, very interested in the impact of technology on agriculture,” said Vinod Khosla, a leading green-tech investor and founder of Khosla Ventures.

Eric Schmidt Joins The New Advisory Board At Cloud Rendering Company OTOY OTOY, a company building rendering technology for running games and other applications in the browser, is announcing a new board of advisors, including Google executive chairman and former CEO Eric Schmidt. “Six years ago, in an interview with the New York Times, I predicted that 90 percent of computing would eventually reside in the web based cloud,” Schmidt said in an emailed statement. “OTOY has created a remarkable technology which moves that last 10 percent – high-end graphics processing – entirely to the cloud. This is a disruptive and important achievement. In my view, it marks the tipping point where the web replaces the PC as the dominant computing platform of the future.” OTOY co-founder and President Alissa Grainger said the board is being formed now to “guide us as we grow OTOY and enter the commercial phase of our business.” As far as I can tell, TechCrunch first wrote about OTOY way back in 2008, so it’s been a long road to commercial deployment.

It bought a start-up called BumpTop, invested in wind farms and, on Monday, announced its 10th venture investment and some details about its year-old venture capital fund. Google Ventures started in March 2009 with the goal of investing up to $100 million in young companies. Until today, Google has been fairly quiet about the fund’s activities. Though it would not disclose how much it has invested, it said it has made 10 investments and aims to invest about $100 million a year. The investments have ranged from less than $500,000 to tens of millions of dollars. Many corporations, including Cisco, Intel and Disney, have venture arms. “This is not a stalking horse for acquiring these companies,” said Eric Schmidt, Google’s chief executive. The Google Ventures team has also expanded from three to 16 full-time people, and Google calls on all its employees to help, said Bill Maris, managing partner of Google Ventures.

Le marché du MDM (mobile device management en anglais) est un segment de marché florissant en l’état actuel, comme le rappelle le succès de Knox par Samsung. Il n’est pas étonnant que Google regarde comment prendre position sur ce marché. Primo pour renforcer son portefeuille de solutions BtoB. Secundo pour accompagner le milliard de terminaux Android en circulation (néanmoins, il existe aussi une application iPhone). Le montant de la transaction pour s’emparer d’Enterproid, qui exploite le portefeuille de solutions Divide n’a pas été précisé. La société avait été créée à New York par des anciens managers de la banque d’affaires Morgan Stanley : David Zhu, Alexander Trewby et Andrew Toy. Google ne précise pas comment les solutions de Divide seront intégrées mais son équipe va rejoindre l’écosystème Android.
Google Acquires Seven Robot Companies, Wants Big Role in Robotics A few months ago, we heard rumors that Google was planning something big in robotics. We also heard that Andy Rubin, the engineer who spearheaded the development of Android at Google, was leading this new robotics effort at the company. Rubin, we were told, is personally interested in robots, and now he wants Google to have a major role in making robotics happen. You'll definitely want to read the entire New York Times story, where Rubin talks a little bit too vaguely about what Google is actually planning on doing with these as-yet hypothetical robots that they're apparently working on over there, but here's the bit about the acquisitions: Mr. Some brief highlights: Schaft is one of the Track A teams participating in the DARPA Robotics Challenge with their own custom robot based on the HRP-2. Cette 6ème édition ne s’est pas cantonnée aux aspects techniques et s’est quelque peu ouverte aux relations sociales, aux relations « temps réels » rendues possibles grâce au Web. Je crois d’ailleurs que le discours de la reine Rania de Jordanie fut éloquent à ce sujet. Sans doute l’un des discours les plus aboutis et simples sur les relations sociales et les changements induits par le Web. Another way to think about whether something exhibits self similarity is if it can be interpreted to exist at different scales.
Google Ventures Funds a Search Marketing Start-Up Google makes the vast majority of its money selling search ads. On Wednesday, Google’s venture capital arm will announce that it has invested in Trada, a start-up that makes it easier for small businesses to buy those ads by crowdsourcing the work. For businesses that do not have a marketing department or a search marketing expert, the process can be daunting. It involves figuring out which key words to use, what the ads should say and how to bid in the auctions to buy the ads. Trada places search ads on Bing, Yahoo and Google. It plans to use the new money in part to expand to other kinds of advertising, like display, video and mobile ads on sites like Facebook and YouTube or on blogs. Trada is a marketplace that matches search engine marketing experts with businesses in need of their expertise. For many of the freelancers, “paid search is sort of addictive, because you’re trying to battle human behavior,” said Niel Robertson, Trada’s founder and chief executive.
