The Julie Project I first met Julie on February 28, 1993. Julie, 18, stood in the lobby of the Ambassador Hotel, barefoot, pants unzipped, and an 8 day-old infant in her arms. She lived in San Francisco’s SRO district, a neighborhood of soup kitchens and cheap rooms. Her room was piled with clothes, overfull ashtrays and trash.

Dossiers d'artistes Until the World No Longer Exists "What we see is not made up of what we are seeing but rather from what we are. "Fernando Pessoa The night, the sex, the wandering… and the need to photograph it all, not so much the perceived act but more like a simple exposure to common and even extreme experiences… It is an inseparable part of photographic practice, in a certain sense, to grasp at existence or risk, desire, the unconsciousness and chance, all of which continue to be essential elements.

The Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation - Biography Robert Mapplethorpe was born in 1946 in Floral Park, Queens. Of his childhood he said, "I come from suburban America. It was a very safe environment and it was a good place to come from in that it was a good place to leave." In 1963, Mapplethorpe enrolled at Pratt Institute in nearby Brooklyn, where he studied drawing, painting, and sculpture. Influenced by artists such as Joseph Cornell and Marcel Duchamp, he also experimented with various materials in mixed-media collages, including images cut from books and magazines. He acquired a Polaroid camera in 1970 and began producing his own photographs to incorporate into the collages, saying he felt "it was more honest."

Matthew Lee Beck Home Contact Larry Sultan gallery exclusive Wallpaper’s creative affair with legendary American photographer Larry Sultan has been going on for quite some time. He’s turned his hand at still life, interiors and fashion location shoots for us over the past five years, each delivered with that characteristic, bizarrely voyeuristic style we love so much. For W* 108, Sultan shot our mischievous ‘Home Alone’ men’s fashion shoot, as well as our limited edition cover for subscribers – a reworking of his iconic ‘Practicing Golf Swing’ from the 1992 series, ‘Pictures from Home’. In celebration of a Sultan-studded issue, we’ve been granted exclusive access to his archive materials. Set for seduction, W*59 Arabian nights, W*81

Many considerations entered into my selections, and while my top 10 are not necessarily my favorite films of the decade (though a couple undoubtedly are) I have selected them for their relevance to the creation of images by photographers today. Movies are a photographic medium (motion pictures) and should be consumed by photographers for the same reasons we look at painting, sculpture, architecture, theatre, and the work of our colleagues; to be inspired, to be moved, to find something great to rip off (or, if you prefer, to dialogue with in our own work). But in recent years, the reasons to watch lots of films have been compounded by the fact that photographers, more and more, are being asked to make what the industry is now calling “motion content”, or what I call, movies.
