Types of volcanic eruptions

During a volcanic eruption, lava, tephra (ash, lapilli, volcanic bombs and blocks), and various gases are expelled from a volcanic vent or fissure. Several types of volcanic eruptions have been distinguished by volcanologists. These are often named after famous volcanoes where that type of behavior has been observed. Some volcanoes may exhibit only one characteristic type of eruption during a period of activity, while others may display an entire sequence of types all in one eruptive series. There are three different meta types of eruptions. Within these wide-defining eruptive types are several subtypes. Eruption mechanisms Volcanic eruptions arise through three main mechanisms: Gas release under decompression causing magmatic eruptionsThermal contraction from chilling on contact with water causing phreatomagmatic eruptionsEjection of entrained particles during steam eruptions causing phreatic eruptions Volcanic eruptions vary widely in strength. After a short precursory period of seismic unrest, the volcano on Fernandino island, Galapagos, started a new eruptive phase on Saturday 16 June around 11h00 – 11h15 local time. Cerro la Cumbra volcano on Fernandino, the youngest island in the volcanic chain of the Galapagos, has entered a new eruptive phase. ---Links / Sources: Previous news

"Real" Alignments? Some gamers hate the D&D alignment system, saying that it is unrealistic and does not match real-world motivations. Many say that attempting to use the system results in unplayable characters. At any rate, there's no doubt in anyone's mind that the alignment system has sparked decades of debate and discussions on whether to get rid of it outright or to make it more usable. This page will focus on certain theories in cross-cultural psychology that could relate to the nine-point alignment system of D&D. Overview Consider the typical graphic of alignment as a wheel. If you weren't sleeping in Outer Planar Cosmology 101, you'll remember that the good planes stretch from Arcadia to Gladsheim, while the evil planes swing from Acheron to Pandemonium. The "divisions" between these alignments are drawn with solid lines, but no such lines exist in reality. Alignment Names The names of the alignments themselves seem to indicate that the alignments are viewed from the lawful good point of view.

Katla volcano: Scientists warn huge Icelandic volcano is about to erupt, and it could even dwarf 2010 ash cloud Scientists have warned that a huge volcano in Iceland is about to erupt, dwarfing the explosion that disrupted air travel across the world eight years ago. Katla, described as “highly hazardous”, has been releasing a massive amount of carbon dioxide – a clear indication that its magma chambers are filling up fast. Researchers believe its eruption could overshadow that of Iceland’s Eyjafjallajokull volcano in 2010 – which caused a giant ash cloud that effectively grounded all European air travel. Thousands of passengers were stranded as the ash dispersed above Europe, triggering further disruption around the world. Katla, which is Icelandic for ‘kettle’, could produce an ash plume three times bigger than the much smaller Eyjafjallajokull, according to scientists. Sarah Barsotti, from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, told The Sunday Times: "There is no way of telling when it will erupt, just that it will." She said: “There must also be a magma build-up to release this quantity of gas.

How to Write Intriguing Male and Female Characters Men and women are different. There, I said it. Now let me go even further out on a limb. Chances are, if you’re female, you write like a girl, and if you’re male, you write like a guy. Not that there’s anything wrong with that … unless, that is, you’d like your writing to be read by members of another gender, or you’re trying to create characters of the opposite sex. If so, it might just help to have a better understanding about how the other half thinks, acts, reads and writes. Linguists, sociologists, behavior specialists and functional brain researchers have documented gender’s effect on almost everything, so it’s natural that it plays a role in how we write and what we’re attracted to as readers. If you haven’t considered the impact of your own gender on your writing, it’s time to start. TALK THE TALK If you’re writing a romance novel, you know your audience is primarily female; if you’re working on an exposé about steroid use in baseball, you assume you’ll have mostly male readers.
