What Happened to Bob Ross' Paintings? Bob Ross said he made over 30,000 paintings in his lifetime. If he didn’t sell them, where did his army of happy clouds go? We’ll let Bob explain: “One of the questions that I hear over and over and over is, ‘What do we do with all these paintings we do on television?’ If that’s true, Ross probably donated around 1,200 paintings. The first copy always hid off screen, and Ross referred to it while the cameras rolled (none of his on-air paintings were spontaneous). As for the 28,800 paintings Ross made outside of television? We have only a vague idea. Do you own a Ross original? [Note: Reader Kelli pointed us to the Bob Ross Art Workshop and Gallery in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, which hosts a collection of his paintings.

Though he's a perennial part of its scene, in many ways he's so much bigger; the root system of his contributions to modern music stretches from coast to coast, from obscure hip-hop to radio pop to the soundtrack of 22 Jump Street. Diplo (real name that nobody uses anymore: Thomas Wesley Pentz) developed his ear in the central Florida club scenes, then took that endless-party beat to Philadelphia, fanning his culty mixtapes across the city before hooking up with M.I.A. and teaching the world how to incorporate a cash-register noise into a chorus. Ten years later he's both the talent and the kingpin; his roving Mad Decent concert series is hugely successful, deeply influential and widely copied within the music biz. You put out your first album over ten years ago now. In the music industry, that's a lifetime. And how has the way you've made your own music changed?

Flying the independent Sub Pop logo alongside DGC's corporate shield — and powered by Kurt Cobain's golden scream — Nevermind shuffled the major/indie ecosystem, brought shine to punk and punk to the charts, transmitted a post-feminist sensitivity to the masses, bridged MTV and college radio, provided aphoristic angst for sullen teens to replicate in school notebook margins, altered the way engineers recorded bands and publicists marketed them, commodified discontent, kicked off an archetypal music myth for the late 20th century, spurred an alt-rock gold rush that resulted in hundreds of bands earning record contracts and impacted nearly every sad guitar player that followed. Not bad for a $287,000 advance.

Interview: Stromae Talks Working with Kanye, His Belgian World Cup Anthem and Why "It's Not Natural to Have Th | Complex UK Paul Van Haver is your favourite artist you’ve never heard of. Originally confining himself to hip-hop under the moniker Opmaestro, Van Haver later changed his stage name to Stromae (inverting the syllables of Maestro) to match his new pop alter-ego, one that would go on to work highly in his favour. Boasting fans such as Kanye West, Jean Claude Van Damme, and Anna Wintour (standardly), his music is omniscient without being invasive. And a quick scan of his YouTube page also reveals he was behind some of the biggest tunes from the last few years, all while remaining relatively anonymous. Stromae's first album, 2010's Cheese, produced cuts like "Alors On Dance", the enormous number one single across half of Europe which spawned a remix collaboration with Kanye and a queue of rappers, singers and producers wanting to work with the 29-year old Belgian. Interview by James Keith (@JamesMBKeith) Your mother’s Flemish, but you were raised in a French community.

What Happens When You Live Abroad | Thought Catalog A very dependable feature of people who live abroad is finding them huddled together in bars and restaurants, talking not just about their homelands, but about the experience of leaving. And strangely enough, these groups of ex-pats aren’t necessarily all from the same home countries, often the mere experience of trading lands and cultures is enough to link them together and build the foundations of a friendship. I knew a decent amount of ex pats — of varying lengths of stay — back in America, and it’s reassuring to see that here in Europe, the “foreigner” bars are just as prevalent and filled with the same warm, nostalgic chatter. But one thing that undoubtedly exists between all of us, something that lingers unspoken at all of our gatherings, is fear. There is a palpable fear to living in a new country, and though it is more acute in the first months, even year, of your stay, it never completely evaporates as time goes on. But there are the fears.

5 examples of how the languages we speak can affect the way we think | TED Blog Keith Chen (TED Talk: Could your language affect your ability to save money?) might be an economist, but he wants to talk about language. For instance, he points out, in Chinese, saying “this is my uncle” is not as straightforward as you might think. “All of this information is obligatory. This got Chen wondering: Is there a connection between language and how we think and behave? While “futured languages,” like English, distinguish between the past, present and future, “futureless languages” like Chinese use the same phrasing to describe the events of yesterday, today and tomorrow. But that’s only the beginning. Navigation and Pormpuraawans In Pormpuraaw, an Australian Aboriginal community, you wouldn’t refer to an object as on your “left” or “right,” but rather as “northeast” or “southwest,” writes Stanford psychology professor Lera Boroditsky (an expert in linguistic-cultural connections) in the Wall Street Journal. Ça me frappe énormément. Mais ce qui m’intéresse, c’est que le contrôle est devenu horizontal. Ça donne l’impression d’une démocratisation du contrôle: tout le monde devient acteur et victime de ce procédé là. [Bora vocal par l’artiste électro Rone, mise en musique des notes d’Alain Damasio enregistrées lors de la rédaction de La Horde du Contrevent]On a l’impression que la NSA rattrape la SF C’est frappant !
