Useful links for CELTA

Anyone following my blog will know that CELTA took over my life in August last year (2014), and will continue to dominate until the same time this year (2015). I’ve been building this list in my head for a while, and it’s finally time to get it onto the blog. It’s arranged into categories, with subtitles and topics in bold to help you navigate. There’s a lot here, so just use the bits you need as you need them rather than trying to look at all of them – if not, you’ll end up being overwhelmed! A quick way to find what you need it to press CTRL + F (CMD + F on a Mac) and type a key word connected to what you’re struggling with, like ‘TTT’, ‘instructions’ or ‘writing’ – this will take you straight to the relevant section. Please let me know if any of the links are broken so I can update them, and feel free to add suggestions to the comments. Before the course CELTA is a very intensive experience, and it’s important to know what you’re getting yourself into. Is the CELTA worth it? Top Reading

types of questions The importance of teaching reading: Teaching reading in the English language course should include the following set of learning goals: 1- enable students to read a wide range of texts in English. 2- develop awareness of the structures of the written English texts. 3- develop the ability of criticizing the content of texts. 4- practice different types of reading according to the purpose of reading. 2 Great Web Tools for Classroom Management March 23, 2014 Classroom management can sometimes be a daunting task particularly to new teachers.Though there is no ready made recipe or silver bullet to solve all problems related to classroom management, experience and practice remain essential assets for gaining more insights into what works and what does not work in a classroom setting. Technology too can give a hand with classroom management and there are several web tools designed specifically to assist teachers in managing their classrooms. I have already talked about some of these web tools in an earlier post here in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning. Today, however, I am sharing with you another two web tools which I deem very important for a better management of your class and student behaviours. 1- Class Dojo

(2011). Teaching and researching motivation (2nd ed.). Harlow: Longman). The authors say in the abstract “Two hundred Hungarian teachers of English from various language teaching institutions were asked how important they considered a selection of 51 strategies and how frequently they used them in their teaching practice. Based on their responses we have compiled a concise set of ten motivational macrostrategies, which we have called the ‘Ten commandments for motivating language learners’” It makes interesting reading because it seems very intuitive, almost obvious.

Make Life Easier on Yourself by Accepting “Good Enough.” Don’t Pursue Perfection, Pursue Progress Becky Beaupre Gillespie once said, “Good enough is the new perfect.” Stop chasing perfection. Perfection suggests a state of flawlessness, without any defects. To be perfect implies a condition where your action or performance attains a level of excellence that cannot be exceeded. Voltaire once observed, “Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.” In other words, instead of pushing yourself to an impossible “perfect,” and therefore getting nowhere, accept “good.” Monica My name is Monika and after eight years of teaching English I’ve decided to share my more or less wild ideas concerning the process of turning innocent people to the Dark Side – eventually (mwahahaha). Since stereotypical role of a teacher is to oppose a student (at least in non-teaching eyes), I have gladly accepted the exaggerated role of Evil Incarnated much to both mine and my students’ amusement. It really makes things easier in a typical whining situation where the students go ‘ooooohhh, whyyyyy soooo muuuuch homewoooooork’ and one simply states ‘because I’m evil, that’s why’. Not much left for discussion, admit it. I’ve worked in public schools in Poland and private language schools both in my country and in Dublin, Ireland and I think I’ve actually covered all age groups so far, except for kindergarten children and people over 70 years old.

John's ESL Community Brian and Victor were ice skating on a frozen lake deep within the forest one night when they suddenly smelled something terrible. "It smells like a fish that died a week ago," said Brian. "It smells worse than a garbage dump," said Victor. The boys followed their noses to a cave in the forest and found a seven foot tall monster with very big eyes. How to get a distinction in your Delta module 2 Background Essays I suppose the title could be considered clickbait, but the idea is to try to help you to do well during Delta module 2. I got a distinction in my first three Background Essays, and imagine LSA4 (which is externally assessed) was up to the same standard. You can do it too, and I think the following tips and reading suggestions will help. There are two things that I think can help you do well at the Background Essays. The first of them is to read widely.
