Scientists grow blood vessels › News in Science (ABC Science) News in Science Thursday, 3 February 2011 AFP Pret-a-porter Scientists claim to have grown blood vessels in a lab for use in coronary bypass or dialysis, a promising alternative to harvesting from the patient. The process involves taking smooth muscle cells from a human cadaver and grafting them onto tubes made of the material used in making dissolvable stitches, called polyglycolic acid. Within 8 to 10 weeks, the tubes degrade and a "fully formed vascular graft" remains, according to the research by scientists from Duke University, East Carolina University and Yale University. The veins have been tested in baboons and dogs. The bio-engineered vessels could also be stored in saline solution for up to a year, suggesting that one day surgeons could pluck a vein "off the shelf" for use in a sick patient, the study said. Ouya game console smashes funding target 9 August 2012Last updated at 10:08 ET The finished console will be much smaller than existing living room gaming gadgets. A plea for funds to help build a cheap games console has ended with nine times more cash donated than had been sought. Ouya asked backers to pledge $950,000 (£606,000) via the Kickstarter website to turn designs for the console into a finished product. By the time the pledge period ended on 9 August the total promised had hit $8,596,475 (£5.8m). The Ouya console is expected to go on sale in March 2013 and cost $99 (£63). Pirate play The gadget will be built around a processor made by graphics firm Nvidia that usually appears in smartphones, and will run Google's Android mobile operating system. The link to Android means it will be able to play any game written for the mobile operating system. Games companies including Square Enix, maker of the Final Fantasy series, and Namco Bandai, creator of Soul Calibur, have pledged their support.

3D printing may put global supply chains out of business: report Will 3D printing make global supply chains unnecessary? That's a real possibility, states a recent report from Transport Intelligence. 3D printing (or "additive manufacturing," as it's called in industrial circles) takes offshore manufacturing and brings it back close to the consumer. It has enormous potential to shift the trade balance. The report, authored by John Manners-Bell of Transport Intelligence and Ken Lyon of Virtual-Partners Ltd., points to the growing role of automation in production resulting from 3D printing: "New technologies which are currently being developed could revolutionize production techniques, resulting in a significant proportion of manufacturing becoming automated and removing reliance on large and costly work forces. Manners-Bell and Lyon admit that a disintegration of global supply chains isn't likely to happen anytime soon, as 3D printing is still in its infancy. A brave new world of fossil fuels on demand In September, a privately held and highly secretive U.S. biotech company named Joule Unlimited received a patent for “a proprietary organism” – a genetically engineered cyanobacterium that produces liquid hydrocarbons: diesel fuel, jet fuel and gasoline. This breakthrough technology, the company says, will deliver renewable supplies of liquid fossil fuel almost anywhere on Earth, in essentially unlimited quantity and at an energy-cost equivalent of $30 (U.S.) a barrel of crude oil. It will deliver, the company says, “fossil fuels on demand.” We’re not talking “biofuels” – not, at any rate, in the usual sense of the word. Joule says it now has “a library” of fossil-fuel organisms at work in its Massachusetts labs, each engineered to produce a different fuel. By way of comparison, Cornell University’s David Pimentel, an authority on ethanol, says that one acre of corn produces less than half as much energy, equivalent to only 328 barrels.

Lab-grown functioning kidney successfully transplanted in rats An engineered kidney transplanted into a living rat has been shown to successfully filter blood and urine -- though at a fraction of a normal kidney's functionality. The groundbreaking study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, provides some distant hope for the 51,000 people in the UK in need of dialysis or an organ transplant. Receiving an organ from a living donor, often a relative, gives patients the greatest chance of success with survival rates about ten percent better on average. However, according to NHS statistics just 1,009 living donor kidney transplants took place in the year preceding March 2012, with under 3,000 transplants taking place in total. As donor shortages persist and those in need of dialysis or transplant increase (up 20 percent since 2006) Kidney Research UK made the announcement this year that kidney disease threatens to become a public health crisis in the near future. Nevertheless the technology will be a game changer.

Bill Gates looks to new toilets to improve world sanitation 15 August 2012Last updated at 09:21 ET Prof Michael Hoffman shows off his winning design - a solar-powered toilet Bill Gates is, in a manner of speaking, flushing his money down the toilet. His charitable organisation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is looking for future loos that can improve sanitation around the world. At the Reinvent the Toilet fair, hosted at its Seattle campus this week, designs included a lavatory that used microwave energy to turn poo into electricity. Another turned excrement into charcoal, while a third used urine for flushing. In total 28 designs were shown off at the fair and the winner was a team from the California Institute of Technology. Led by Prof Michael Hoffman, the toilet they designed was solar-powered and generated hydrogen gas and electricity.
