Leaf-like sea slug feeds on light - Technology & Science A green sea slug found off North America's east coast not only looks like a leaf, but can also make food out of sunlight, just like a plant. The solar-powered sea slug Elysia chlorotica can live entirely from energy from the sun. It's about three centimetres long. ((PNAS)) U.S. researchers have found that the sea slug Elysia chlorotica can photosynthesize, using energy from light to convert carbon dioxide into sugars. "If you shine light on these slugs, they fix carbon dioxide and make oxygen just like a plant," Sidney Pierce of the University of South Florida told CBC Radio's Quirks & Quarks.

'It was like we were playing with radioactive paint,' said photographer Phil Hart who snapped the bizarre sight as his friends emerged from a lake in the dark of night. The light is created by a chemical reaction called bioluminescence, which happens when a naturally-occuring micro-organism in the water is disturbed. Phil, 34, put his camera on a very slow shutter speed and threw sand and stones into the water to cause the reaction and capture as much of the blue haze as possible. These images are particularly stunning because the concentration of the micro-organism 'Noctiluca Scintillans' was abnormally high when he took the photos at Gippsland Lakes in Victoria, Australia. Phil said: 'To be there watching this bioluminescence is spellbinding and to see it like this is very rare.

Incredible Video Of Giant Sea Icicle Freezing Everything In Its Path Frozen sea brine is freezing everything in its path. The BBC filmed brinicles, solidified salt water, as they descended into Antarctic water and iced over everything sitting at the ocean bottom. Brinicles are underwater icicles that form around salt water sinking from sea ice. The film crew found a brinicle beneath the ice off the foothills of the volcano Mount Erebus. Once the phenomenon was spotted, the news organization set up time lapse cameras to capture the freezing salt overtaking starfish and sea urchins as it coated the sea floor in ice.
20 Captivating Photos Shot At Exactly The Right Moment There are some things in life that make me feel dated (notice I didn’t use the word “old” LOL). For example, sending a fax, writing in cursive (with a pen) and talking on any phone with a cord (and twirling it around my fingers) are all things that kids born in 2011 might never have the opportunity to experience. I remember back in the days when people would say, “I wish I had my camera with me today, I could have taken some great pictures.” Now that practically everyone has a smartphone, we all have our cameras with us everywhere we go. Switzerland Switzerland In June 2011, we spent a week in Switzerland, flying into Geneva, with an initial stop in Montreux, followed by a picturesque stay in Wengen, located above the Lauterbrunnen valley. The alps provided a stunning backdrop to explore the area.
