He blurted: "Google is the new Intel." You could no longer think of Google as a software or Internet company, he continued. The company's secret sauce lay its massive data centers. Data centers didn't cost as much as a new semiconductor fab, but they still cost hundreds of millions to build and even more to operate over time. 1.5 percent of the power in the U.S. gets sucked into them. It was a somewhat radical idea back then, but events have proved the idea right. And that data center explains why Google will ultimately become a utility and/or energy services provider. Now, you turn off the lights. Who better than Google to handle this sort of continuous, complex processing? Providing these services will allow Google to better leverage its hardware resources. The Mountain View company announced on Tuesday a new research and development group whose mandate will be to continue to develop electricity from renewable energy sources much cheaper (and cleaner) than coal. The new initiative, dubbed Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal, will primarily target energy sources like advanced solar thermal power, wind power technologies and enhanced geothermal, according to Google co-founder Larry Page, and the company plans to shell out tens of millions of dollars in 2008 on R&D and related investments. Google also said it anticipates investing hundreds of millions of dollars in other renewable energy projects which the company also hopes will generate positive returns. I happen to live in a city where bicycles are stolen quite frequently, and it is a constant topic for discussion. What if I could track my bike and get it back really easily? But in reality, it may not be so easy, since there are so many stakeholders potentially involved. I want to use this case as an example, showing how complex the business setup often gets within IoT, even in a simple tracking use case. Technology From a technological viewpoint, it is pretty straightforward to track a bicycle using IoT. Devices (GPS or other positioning device)Connectivity (GSM, Wifi, Sigfox,LoRa etc.)Cloud service/platform to gather and process the dataApp(s) to present the info in your smartphone or similar. All of these components are commercially available, and quite easily assembled into an IoT solution.
