The Race For The Second Screen: Five Apps That Are Shaping Social TV It’s easy to understand why 2012 is shaping up to be the year of social TV. Consumers are turning to the so-called second screen like never before. A 2011 whitepaper prepared by Yahoo/Nielsen reported that as many as 86 percent of viewers use mobile devices while watching TV. While many think that number might be high, it signals a trend in consumer behavior that cannot be ignored. Broadcasters and marketers are feeling the heat of both risk and reward. One result has been investment flowing into social TV apps, in what some--like MIT research scientist Marie-Jose Montpetit--are already comfortable calling a bubble. "2012 is the year that people will think, rightly maybe, that they will make a lot of money out of social television, for the first time ever,” she says. Yahoo snatched up audio-synchronization app IntoNow for $20-$30 million last April, just 12 weeks after it launched. Here are five players already in the market. [Image: Brisbane/Shutterstock]

iPhone Tracker Shows Your Tracks By Warner Crocker | Do you know where your iPhone says you’ve been? If you’re one of those folks who are curious about how your smartphones track you this little application offers an interesting look into where you’ve been. iPhone Tracker installs on an OSX device that you’ve been syncing your iPhone to. It then scans your iPhone backup files for a hidden file that contains your location info. If it finds that file it creates a graphical display of where you’ve been with your iPhone. The open source iPhone Tracker doesn’t send that data anywhere. For what it’s worth, if you want to see where you’ve been with your iPhone, it’s might be worth a look.

Fill A Seat - Main Page Google Voice and Sprint Make a Very Nice Couple | Epicenter Google and Sprint’s integration of Google Voice is just starting to become available, and if you are a Sprint user with a smartphone, you should seriously consider playing matchmaker. The idea is pretty simple. You go to Google Voice, sign up with a Sprint number, and your phone magically turns into a Google Voice phone. By choosing to integrate Google Voice on your Sprint phone, you get the best of both worlds with a few caveats — and it’s especially cool if you are new to Google Voice. If you don’t already have a Google Voice account, it’s quite simple. For those who aren’t familiar — that means that you can set your cellphone number to ring all your phones and even your computer through a Gmail account. All calls, except international ones, use Sprint’s network so you still get the benefit of reliable call quality. For those with existing Google Voice numbers — or those like me who have already ported over a number to Google Voice, the process works the opposite way.
