[Scroll down for an example] Gimp Advanced Guide - 8.3 The Emboss and Bump map Filters There are two filters that are particularly useful for rendering. These are Emboss and Bump map. The Emboss filter, found in Image:Filters/Distorts, creates the effect that an image is embossed into a thin metal plate. Figure 8.9 illustrates the use of the filter for a very simple case. Figure 8.9(a) shows an image that was created using a radial gradient, and Figure 8.9(b) shows the corresponding dialog for the Emboss filter. The three sliders in the filter dialog control the embossing effect, and Figure 8.10 shows a 3D scene that defines the effect of each one. When the light source is on one side of the object, the other side must be in shadow, as shown in Figure 8.10. ``Wait a minute! shows the radial gradient from Figure 8.9(a) in a 3D context. The red arrows, called gradient vectors, are computed for each pixel in the image (only three are shown in Figure 8.11). has a positive projection onto the vector pointing towards the light source. So much for the theory. Figures 8.14 and 8.15

Dave Duncan » Installing “David’s Batch Processor” for GIMP in Ubuntu Linux David’s Batch Processor is a simple GUI based plug-in for GIMP that allows you to perform a number of processing tasks (like resizing, changing orientation, batch file renaming) to a large number (or small number) of pictures at once. If you upload photos to the web, you do this all the time. If you don’t have millions of dollars to buy PhotoShop (or ethical problems with ‘borrowing’ it), then GIMP is a pretty good solution. I had some trouble finding (clear) instructions on how to install the plug-in, so after some trial and error (and a lot of help from my own personal tech support guru, Steve) it’s now up and running. Here are some simple instructions to get it installed in one quick run. I did the following in Ubuntu Linux (both in Edgy Eft and Fesity Fawn) and it worked just fine. 1. sudo apt-get install libgimp2.0-dev gcc cpp g++ 3. cd /usr/src/ 4. sudo tar -xvzf /home/[username]/Desktop/dbpSrc-1-1-5.tgz cd dbp-1.1.5 make make install 5. Let me know if this works well for you.
