Using Differentiation As Tool For Behaviour Management - Generalscience Resource A reflective article I wrote purely based on my teaching including various research My second school placement involved attending a larger than average, secondary school located in Rochdale called Falinge Park High School. The school has a very high proportion of pupils eligible for pupil premium in comparison to schools nationally. This was also the case for the number of EAL learners as three quarters of the school is made up of pupils from minority ethnic backgrounds. My first week at Falinge Park High School involved a full-time timetable of observation to support my development in teaching and also to introduce me to the concept of super labs. Differentiation is an important aspect of teaching as a class is likely to contain pupils who are all at different stages of cognitive, social, and physical development. Lesson 1 Taking these issues into consideration I decided to carefully plan my first lesson to achieve a successful learning environment.
Product Differentiation What Is Product Differentiation? Product differentiation is a marketing strategy that strives to distinguish a company's products or services from the competition. Successful product differentiation involves identifying and communicating the unique qualities of a company's offerings while highlighting the distinct differences between those offerings and others on the market. Product differentiation goes hand-in-hand with developing a strong value proposition to make a product or service attractive to a target market or audience. If successful, product differentiation can create a competitive advantage for the product's seller and ultimately build brand awareness. Methods of Differentiation in the Classroom It’s a term that every teacher has heard during their training: differentiation. Differentiation is defined by the Training and Development Agency for Schools as ‘the process by which differences between learners are accommodated so that all students in a group have the best possible chance of learning’. In recent decades it has come to be considered a key skill for any teacher, especially those of mixed-ability classes. What is meant by ‘differences between learners’? In a large class, differences between students may on the face of it seem too numerous to be quantified, but differentiation works on 3 key aspects which can be summed up as follows: Readiness to learn Learning needs Interest These differences may sound rather broad, but by applying effective methods of differentiation, it is possible to cater for quite wide variations between learners. Reducing Behavior Problems in the Elementary School Classroom: Recommendation 1: Identify the Specifics of the Problem Behavior Reducing Behavior Problems in the Elementary School Classroom Every teacher experiences difficulty at one time or another in trying to remedy an individual student's behavior problem that is not responsive to preventative efforts. Because research suggests that the success of a behavior intervention hinges on identifying the specific conditions that prompt and reinforce the problem behavior (that is, the behavior's "antecedents" and "consequences"), we recommend that teachers carefully observe the conditions in which the problem behavior of an individual student is likely to occur and not occur. Teachers then can use that information to tailor effective and efficient intervention strategies that respond to the needs of the individual student within the classroom context. Level of evidence: Moderate The panel judged the level of evidence supporting this recommendation to be moderate. 1. Differentiation - Geoff PettyGeoff Petty Differentiation is the process by which differences between learners are accommodated so that all students in a group have the best possible chance of learning. We used to teach subjects and classes – now we teach students. In the Third Edition of ‘Teaching Today’ Geoff Petty (2004) there is an appendix which summarises differentiation strategies, each of which is explained in detail in the book. The downloads on the Active Learning Page of this website are also very relevant. The materials that can be downloaded from this page are principally for teacher trainers and staff trainers. These materials are in draft form, and were used for an LSDA Train Trainers project on differentiation involving 75 UK colleges that I delivered with Carole Mitchel. There is a lot of material here, consider the poor trees!
