As the new year approaches, the thought on everyone’s mind is how to make 2015 even more interactive, educational, and engaging for STEM students than the past year. Indeed, it has become a national priority to develop new ways to entice students to STEM careers and offer engaging ways to teach STEM that dismantles old and less-effective learning methods. From flipped learning to incorporating Learning Management Systems (LMS), to augmented reality, teachers are talking about how to keep moving STEM education forward. According to a recent Teachercast article, 5 EdTech Trends Changing Education for the Longterm, one of the biggest trends for 2015 will be the incorporation of more apps into classroom curriculum including gamification, collaboration, self-learning and assessment apps. 100+ STEM iPad Apps For Learning 100+ STEM iPad Apps For Learning STEM education is “an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy. (Tsupros, Kohler, & Hallinen, 2009) The Lexile® Framework for Reading There is no direct correspondence between a specific Lexile measure and a specific grade level. Within any classroom or grade, there will be a range of readers and a range of reading materials. For example, in a fifth-grade classroom there will be some readers who are ahead of the typical reader (about 250L above) and some readers who are behind the typical reader (about 250L below). To say that some books are "just right" for fifth graders assumes that all fifth graders are reading at the same level. The Lexile® Framework for Reading is intended to match readers with texts at whatever level the reader is reading. MetaMetrics® has studied the ranges of Lexile reader measures and Lexile text measures at specific grades in an effort to describe the typical Lexile measures of texts and the typical Lexile measures of students of a given grade level.

Using a Project Wall to Support Gold Standard Project Based Teaching Moving from good to great Project Based Learning involves being aware of the specific, intentional “teacher moves” you make that drive student inquiry, engagement, and excitement for learning. One “move” I made that enhanced my PBL teaching was developing the classroom project wall into an active teaching tool, rather than a bulletin board. The project wall is the visual space in the classroom that helps manage information, project questions, calendars, standards, assessments, and resources that guide student learning during the project. 1. Design and Plan: One of the ironies of PBL done well is that the best projects arise not from spontaneous decision-making but from detailed planning.
