Seth's Blog: Texting while working Yes, you shouldn't text while driving, or talk on the cell phone, or argue with your dog or drive blindfolded. It's an idiot move, one that often leads to death (yours or someone else's). I don't think you should text while working, either. Or use social networking software of any kind for that matter. I don't think there's anything wrong with doing all that at work (in moderation). You're competing against people in a state of flow, people who are truly committed, people who care deeply about the outcome. Raise the stakes.

Smartphones are able to interpret the appropriate mobile app (i.e. contacts, YouTube, maps, etc.) for rendering barcode content which can uniquely equate to useful time savings for users. Cellphone cops make 'joke' of law A senior police officer has condemned colleagues for using their cellphones while driving, saying it is a joke to go out and enforce the law when officers appear to be readily flouting it. Another officer has been caught on camera talking on his cellphone at traffic lights. He was filmed by a motorist in West Auckland on Thursday. "I wound down the window and started recording, I was yelling out trying to get his attention," said the motorist, who did not want to be identified. "Then the light turned green and he casually drove off, still talking." The motorist sent the footage to the Herald after seeing a similar photograph in Friday's paper showing a man believed to be an officer talking on his cellphone on the Southwestern Motorway. Staff at police national headquarters were not convinced the man was an officer and said that, either way, there were provisions in the law allowing officers to talk on their cellphones if it was within the execution of their duties. - NZ Herald

Absorption spectra of gaseous, liquid and solid water The water absorption spectrum is very complex. Shown opposite are the main vibrations occurring in water. The water molecule has a very small moment of inertia on rotation which gives rise to rich combined vibrational-rotational spectra in the vapor containing tens of thousands to millions of absorption lines. Opposite is shown a comparison of the gas, liquid and solid spectra of the same amount of H2O [1392]. Creative Characters interview with Michael Doret, January 2011 He started up his foundry Alphabet Soup seven years ago, and has published one typeface family a year on average. But what typefaces they are! With up to 2000 glyphs per font, and endless ways of using digital technology to emulate hand-lettering, his fonts are clearly the work of a seasoned scriptmeister. Indeed, before entering the font business, Michael Doret was already a household name in the design world, producing iconic designs for the likes of The New York Knicks, KISS and TIME Magazine. Michael, you grew up in Brooklyn, not far from the amusement park in Coney Island. I didn’t realize what an incredible influence growing up in Brooklyn in the ’50s and ’60s was to me until a couple of years ago. I realized that my work only looks the way it does because as a kid I was constantly exposed to — and often surrounded by — an incredible visual cornucopia. Could you say something about your art and design education? Absolutely! steinweiss script metroscript deliscript grafika orion MD

Understanding Traffic Flow of a NZ ISP. Generic ISP NZ Limited This post attempts to describe how Internet traffic with a fairly standard ISP works in New Zealand, from the point of a fictional ISP called “Generic ISP NZ Limited”. I can’t stress enough that this isn’t modelled on any actual ISP in New Zealand! The first thing to note is if you work in an ISP in New Zealand is that I've taken a few creative liberties with a few things. Feel free to point these out in the comments and I’ll tell you if I meant to do that, or I’ll correct the article as required. This is a fairly generic model I'm discussing here, I’m also talking mostly about ADSL services here too, though most things are relevant regardless of access method. I'm also not talking much about the portion of the network from your house to the DSLAM. Ok, so welcome to Generic ISP New Zealand Ltd! Let's look at our core network. Here's Generic ISP NZ’s Network Diagram (click it for bigger): This links is very expensive, so we only buy 100Mb/s of capacity.

Create a Red Giant Star in Photoshop When a star like our own reaches the end of its life, it begins to run out of hydrogen fuel in its core. Like a car running out of gas, it will begin to sputter, swelling to a size that could encompass every planet in our solar system out to Mars. When this happens, the sun will swallow the Earth and will spell certain doom for all life on our planet. Today's tutorial is part of a 4-part series depicting the journey of the inhabitance of a dying world that must travel into the unknown to find a new world to call home. In this series, we will explore the cosmos from the perspective of this fictional civilization making their way through the universe and will demonstrate the techniques that you can use in Photoshop to depict your own cosmic scenery.
