Internet troll personality study: Machiavellianism, narcissism, psychopathy, sadism. Medioimages/Photodisc In the past few years, the science of Internet trollology has made some strides. Last year, for instance, we learned that by hurling insults and inciting discord in online comment sections, so-called Internet trolls (who are frequently anonymous) have a polarizing effect on audiences, leading to politicization, rather than deeper understanding of scientific topics. That’s bad, but it’s nothing compared with what a new psychology paper has to say about the personalities of trolls themselves. It is hard to overplay the results: The study found correlations, sometimes quite significant, between these traits and trolling behavior. In the study, trolls were identified in a variety of ways. E.E. To be sure, only 5.6 percent of survey respondents actually specified that they enjoyed “trolling.” I have sent people to shock websites for the lulz. I like to troll people in forums or the comments section of websites. I enjoy griefing other players in multiplayer games.

A Brief Look at the Cultural & Economic Impacts of American Comics – PUB800 From the pages of newspapers to breaking records at the box office, comic books have shifted from light, humorous distractions to devices of cultural influence and big sources of revenue for publishers across many sectors. This paper will briefly look at the comic book’s rise in the early 1920s, the subsequent decline in the middle of the last century and the resurgence in the years after, with a view to touch on their utility, earning potential (licensing) and overall penetration into pop culture. The comics we discuss here are of the American variety. It must be noted that comic culture had existed in Europe with Rodolphe Töpffer’s Histoire de Monsieur Cryptogame from 1827 and in Japan in the form of manga with Hokusai, from the early 19th century. Comics are not an American invention, though this medium of storytelling has had a deep and long-lasting effect (Kelley, 2009). Comics first started with the comic strip in newspapers; later expressed in graphic novels. Source: DC Comics

How Facebook Makes Us Dumber Why does misinformation spread so quickly on the social media? Why doesn’t it get corrected? When the truth is so easy to find, why do people accept falsehoods? A new study focusing on Facebook users provides strong evidence that the explanation is confirmation bias: people’s tendency to seek out information that confirms their beliefs, and to ignore contrary information. Confirmation bias turns out to play a pivotal role in the creation of online echo chambers. The new study, led by Michela Del Vicario of Italy’s Laboratory of Computational Social Science, explores the behavior of Facebook users from 2010 to 2014. Del Vicario and her coauthors explored how Facebook users spread conspiracy theories (using 32 public web pages); science news (using 35 such pages); and “trolls,” which intentionally spread false information (using two web pages). In sum, the researchers find a lot of communities of like-minded people. Can anything be done?

Marvel Comics and History - IGN Share. From World War II to the Great Recession, we look at how Marvel's heroes and history have collided. By Jesse Schedeen Fear Itself, Marvel's latest major event comic, is poised to debut later this month with Fear Itself: Book of the Skull. While this storyline will pit Marvel's heroes against the combined threat of The Serpent and a newly empowered Red Skull, one of its more intriguing characteristics is the way in which Fear Itself aims to capitalize on the various real world fears people have about things like the economy and the War on Terror. Fear Itself should be a thematically relevant book, but this wouldn't be the first time a Marvel comic has aimed to capture the tone of the times. World War II The Golden Age of comics and the rise in popularity of costumed superheroes coincided with the beginnings of World War II. Superhero comics are often accused of serving as thinly veiled male power fantasies. The Civil Rights and Counterculture Movements Vietnam and the Cold War

How Technology Disrupted The Truth One Monday morning last September, Britain woke to a depraved news story. The prime minister, David Cameron, had committed an “obscene act with a dead pig’s head”, according to the Daily Mail. “A distinguished Oxford contemporary claims Cameron once took part in an outrageous initiation ceremony at a Piers Gaveston event, involving a dead pig,” the paper reported. Piers Gaveston is the name of a riotous Oxford university dining society; the authors of the story claimed their source was an MP, who said he had seen photographic evidence: “His extraordinary suggestion is that the future PM inserted a private part of his anatomy into the animal.” The story, extracted from a new biography of Cameron, sparked an immediate furore. Then, after a full day of online merriment, something shocking happened. “We couldn’t get to the bottom of that source’s allegations,” she said on Channel 4 News. Does the truth matter any more? How did we end up here? The truth is a struggle.

Marketing Superheroes: Marketing Strategy Lessons from the Marvel v. DC Rivalry - CG Life | Life Science and Healthcare Marketing Agency With nearly $11 billion in worldwide box office sales, Marvel is the most successful cinematic franchise of all time. Marvel’s successful results, however, have not come exclusively from their big-name characters. Marvel’s “Ant-Man,” a hero most people have probably never heard of, earned $150 million more than the first Captain America movie. This success is sharply contrasted by the stumbling efforts of their primary competitor. Despite being home to famed characters such as Batman and Superman, the DC Cinematic Universe has not enjoyed the same number of blockbuster hits as Marvel. In addition, Marvel’s dominance over DC on the cinematic stage comes in the face of serious challenges, including the licensing of their most popular characters. Marvel overcame these challenges by gradually building an unshakeable brand, strategically deploying their assets to create astronomical ROI. DC has thrown tactic after tactic at the wall in the hopes that something will stick. Before Phase 1

Why Everyone Should Watch Less News – Member Feature Stories It has been said of each successive scandal or policy announcement in the Trump era, that if you’re not outraged you’re not paying attention. Certainly, there has been no shortage of outrageous images splashed across the news: children in cages, an American President kowtowing to a hostile foreign power, and a seemingly unending parade of well-known personalities exposed as abusers or deviants. Perhaps it’s time we realize that consuming more news about the world around us is not the way to improve it (or ourselves), personally or politically. But the question we need to ask ourselves here is not whether such behaviors (or the cover-ups of such behaviors) are outrageous, but rather why we have become such insatiable consumers of these outrages? Indeed. Perhaps it’s time we realize that consuming more news about the world around us is not the way to improve it (or ourselves), personally or politically. Our modern notion of leisure has perverted the ancient definition of the word. Novels.
