Reflections on learning (1) Last week we began to share with parents the learning theory that has been at the heart of our practice at Christ the Sower since the summer. Sometimes known as brain-based learning, or accelerated learning, it was articulated formally in the late 90s by Alastair Smith, Colin Rose, Nicola Call and their colleagues. It is not hard to understand nor hard to implement, but it derives from researchers ability to translate what we began to know of the structure of the brain to the way we learn. It has always been a mystery to me why so much of our understanding of the brain does not actually reach primary schools. It would be an unusual gym that did not use what we knew of the functions of different muscle groups to enhance physical prowess.
