A Week of STEM activities! | The Ardent Teacher I decided to take on my own challenge of incorporating a STEM activity every day for a week. It turned out to be a huge success where both my students and I had a blast. Here were the various STEM tasks that they took on: STEM activity 1: Newspaper towers! For these towers, the only prep work is collecting old newspapers and rolling them into dowels. The only supplies students were given were: 7 newspaper dowels and two feet of painters tape. The supplies given to each group for the tower challenge. Each group had approximately 35 minutes to complete their tower. A sample of student created newspaper towers. A few groups even drew up plans for their designs (awesome!) One group’s initial design conceptualized during their brainstorming, all self directed. Once completed, we had about 10 minutes left in class for their creations to be put to the test. Cancer treatment for MS patients gives 'remarkable' results UK doctors in Sheffield say patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) are showing "remarkable" improvements after receiving a treatment usually used for cancer. About 20 patients have received bone marrow transplants using their own stem cells. Some patients who were paralysed have been able to walk again. Prof Basil Sharrack, of Sheffield's Royal Hallamshire Hospital, said: "To have a treatment which can potentially reverse disability is really a major achievement." Around 100,000 people in the UK have MS, an incurable neurological condition. Most patients are diagnosed in their 20s and 30s. The disease causes the immune system to attack the lining of nerves in the brain and spinal cord. The treatment - known as an autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) - aims to destroy the faulty immune system using chemotherapy. It is then rebuilt with stem cells harvested from the patient's own blood. About 20 MS patients have been treated in Sheffield in the past three years. Cost-effective

issues final rule on safety and effectiveness of antibacterial soaps Español The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today issued a final rule establishing that over-the-counter (OTC) consumer antiseptic wash products containing certain active ingredients can no longer be marketed. Companies will no longer be able to market antibacterial washes with these ingredients because manufacturers did not demonstrate that the ingredients are both safe for long-term daily use and more effective than plain soap and water in preventing illness and the spread of certain infections. Some manufacturers have already started removing these ingredients from their products. This final rule applies to consumer antiseptic wash products containing one or more of 19 specific active ingredients, including the most commonly used ingredients – triclosan and triclocarban. Antibacterial hand and body wash manufacturers did not provide the necessary data to establish safety and effectiveness for the 19 active ingredients addressed in this final rulemaking.

With websites like Houzz and Pinterest, the possibilities are exciting, inspiring and endless. One morning seven years ago, Annie Groer wrote an article for the Home Section of the Washington Post called, “Secretary Albright’s Sugar Shakers: And Other Significant Parts of Great Women’s Houses.” Liz Workman’s book featured many photographs and few words. Grand Marshal Mrs. Times have changed and Annie Groer's memorable piece in the Washington Post brought “focus on things that are, or were, “significant parts” of the domestic lives of five great women.” The photographs of these five women and the “significant parts” of their household were remarkable. Secretary Albright's silver sugar shakers looked so elegant and simple standing on a polished silver tray. Fortunately over a number of years, it was possible to slowly accumulate an antique sugar shaker collection of my own.
