Sustainable Agriculture students eligible for funding Fleming News. Students taking Fleming College’s Sustainable Agriculture program at the Frost Campus are now eligible to apply for special funding through the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) and Agriculture Canada.

The program is delivered by Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA) on behalf of OMAFRA. The funding helps new farmers offset training costs. Fleming’s Sustainable Agriculture program has been recognized as a training opportunity eligible for cost-share funding through the program. New farmers can receive up to 75% of their tuition, textbook and travel expenses for the program, provided they meet the eligibility requirements. Applicants must complete a Growing Your Farm Profits Workshop, have their action plan reviewed by their workshop leader, and have a Farm Business Registration Number or equivalent. “New farmers face many obstacles when it comes to starting out.

Throw out the word homesteading in a crowd and you will get very different reactions. Some look at you like you’re crazy – picturing the pioneers crossing the prairie in search of land, only a covered wagon as your shelter. Others (myself included) perk up at the thought of a sustainable, self-sufficient lifestyle. The good life. Going green is quite chic these days. {comfrey flowers in the garden} In order to change the way we live, we must first change the way we think. Our way of life almost entirely depends on finite resources that will soon be so depleted as to cause world wars. That is unless we do something about it. Through homesteading we have an opportunity to do all of the above plus learn truly useful skills that go untaught in universities.
