How to Synthesize a Glitch Drum Kit with Operator. This tutorial introduces a simple and quick way of using Ableton Live's Operator synthesizer to produce glitchy and noisy drum samples, the types of which are heavily used in the glitch/idm/experimental electronic music scene by artists such as Alva Noto, Kearley, Aoki Takamasa and Daisuke Tanabe to name just a few.

How to Synthesize a Glitch Drum Kit with Operator

We'll be covering a basic kit, including "clicks" and "pops", static-like sounds, kick, and snare. The purpose of this tutorial is not to cover every possible type of glitch sample that can be produced with Operator, and does not by all means imply that this is a method used by the above artists. It showcases a basic idea/technique that can be developed further through experimenting and combining other Live devices and effects.

'gazed and Confused: A Guide to Shoegaze in your DAW - Zeros and Ones

Coined by an NME journalist as a derogatory reference to the guitarists’ motionless performance gazing at their pedalboards, it encompasses the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Seefeel, The Jesus & Mary Chain and Ride. Taking inspiration from the washy dream pop of Cocteau Twins and the new-wave Goth sensibilities of The Cure, along with the psychedelic, hypnotic noise jams of Sonic Youth, somehow shoegaze came to be. Largely based in Oxford, Reading and London this small scene of indie bands rejected the label, not wanting to be compartmentalized by idle and apathetic print media. Free Jazz Funk Drum Sample Library

It's a small kit--a kick, snare, two toms, and two cymbals--just like something a jazz drummer would play at a gig or recording session. In terms of jazz drums, I've always been in favor of small kits. Skilled jazz drummers can make a single drum sound very expressive, bringing out its character. It was with this in mind I sampled this drumset.

10 old-school sampling tricks that still sound great today. SAMPLING WEEK: Although sampling technology has moved on massively over the past three decades, and today's software can do a whole lot more than the hardware that it replaced, it would be a mistake to assume that the techniques used by those old-school pioneers are redundant, too.

10 old-school sampling tricks that still sound great today

In fact, it was often the limitations of their gear that forced these producers to be creative with their sampling, and they came up with some wild and wonderful sounds as a result. So, let's consider how these early sampling hounds pulled off their most famous tricks, and then explain how you can recreate them in a software setup. 1. Time to pitch Although basic timestretching was a feature on early samplers, it didn't always give the desired results. Of course, this would affect the pitch of the sample, too - hence all the highpitched chipmunk vocals in early hardcore and jungle music. 2. 3. For almost as long as people have been sampling sounds, they've been reversing them. 4. 5. TX16Wx Software Sampler. Pereckerdal/HSPad. Argotlunar by Michael Ourednik. Granulator VST / AudioUnit Project maintained by mourednikHosted on GitHub Pages — Theme by mattgraham Introduction Argotlunar is a tool for creating surreal transformations of audio streams.

Argotlunar by Michael Ourednik

Specifically, it is a real-time delay-line granulator. It disintegrates an audio stream into short samples (grains). Time-related parameters can be synced to the host tempo, for rhythmic and pulsing textures. Most of the parameters can be correlated. Filter cut-off correlated with pitch: Higher filter cut-off for grains with higher pitch, and vice versa.Grain duration correlated with panning: Grains with shorter duration panned to the center of the stereo field, and grains with longer duration panned wide in the stereo field. Argotlunar is free software. Current version is 2.0.6. Fuzzy Sawtooths With U-He Diva. Synth Secrets is a series of programming tutorials in which we show how to make a range of classic and new synth sounds using plugins such as Massive, Sylenth and Predator. This week we use U-He’s DIVA plugin to create a fuzzy sawtooth-based pad patch.

Here’s an example of the sound we’ll be making, with some added filter frequency automation: Update Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. Here’s a screen grab of the MIDI we’ve used for the chords. Step 1 Load an instance of Diva and click on the Patches tab at the bottom of the synth. How... those 90's atmospheric dnb pads? Break shows you how to create a DnB break with Addictive Drums 2. The DnB producer's DnB producer and Symmetry label boss Break (known to his mum as Charlie Bierman) was keen to create a custom breakbeat for us using XLN Audio Addictive Drums 2's state-of-the-art virtual drumming and some sliced-up "vintage" breaks from the CM sample repository.

We were only too happy to let him... Why did you want to create a break using Addictive Drums 2? "Over the last ten or 15 years of producing, I've gone through a lot of the classic breaks, and there are always more breaks to find out there, but it's that freedom of being able to create your own. It's not quite the same, but it gives you more control to create that drum kit you'd imagine. "I've used Addictive Drums for a couple of years, and there are times when you get beats that do sound like breaks – you can get pretty close to emulating that. Many soundware developers have made attempts to create vintage-style breakbeats. "I've done drum recording myself, and I think everyone should give it a go.

Main Beat. The Bluffer's Guide To Compression - MusicTech.net. Every track needs a compressor, and finding the right way to apply it needn’t be a struggle. Rob Boffard demystifies this vital and often misunderstood effect… There is no other technique more likely to make your music sound amazing than compression – if it’s used correctly. Compression is why songs on the radio sound so amazingly full and rich.

It’s why drums are tight and punchy, why you can pick up vocals in in mix, why you can take any piece of audio you like and turn it into a growling monster. More than any other audio effect, compression will make you sound like a total pro. That doesn’t mean it’s easy. Analogue String Synthesis. Analogue-style strings and pads are a staple of techno, house and pretty much any other dance genre you can think of. We explain how to create amazing analogue strings in any subtractive synth plugin. Before digital synthesis came of age in the 1980s, pretty much the only game in town for creating lush polyphonic strings and pads was analogue subtractive synthesis – using oscillators, filters and modulators.

Despite the advances in synthesis over the last three decades, analogue strings have remained the benchmark of dance music pads. Here we’re going to recreate their classic sound using Steinberg’s Retrologue, although any decent subtractive synth plugin should be up to the task. The First Lick. Drum Programming: Chillout, Raw Hip Hop. It’s chillout this fortnight, with three downtempo loops deconstructed. The first is a raw, live workout, loosely influenced by old-school hip-hop. Beat Dissected is a regular series that deconstructs drum patterns, showing you how to recreate them in any DAW. Just copy the grids in your own software to recreate the loop. Further Chords. Dance music theory expert Oliver Curry demonstrates how to break away from basic chords and create more complex harmonic structures.

Way back in the very first instalment of Passing Notes we looked at some basic techniques for creating deep house chords and progressions, focusing on major and minor 7 chords. This time, we’re going to expand on that idea and look at the construction of a number of other commonly used chords. Contrary Motion. Sampled Chords. Fuzzy Sawtooths With U-He Diva. Chopping drum hits out of loops is a great way to gather one-shot drum samples, but since they're in a loop, the tail or decay of the drum is often interrupted by another hit. To make our abbreviated samples sound more natural, we'll try to recreate the lost tail of the drum in Edison, but any audio editor will do. Load a loop into Edison and delete everything except the drum you intend to extract. In Edison, Ctrl+Del will 'trim' the audio, deleting everything except the current selection. Aim for a nice, clean hit without any strange background noises. The Essential...
