Each one of us finds a place in the society. But do you think everyone is able to reap the same benefits out of this? Are we on the same pedestal? Do all of us have access to the same opportunities and luxuries in the society? The answers are in negative. Most often people realize this responsibility towards the society in their old age when they either want to pass their time or they genuinely realize the importance of giving back all they have earned in life but that is generally too late.

These words should act as our guidelines in an era where there are people in the society who need the help of others to fulfil even the basic necessities of life. And to carry forward with this thought, we, here at Teens with a Purpose create a platform for like-minded youth who are willing to use their creativity and voice to bring about a change in the society so that it becomes a more comfortable and peaceful place for the youth, teens and the unprivileged. Just so that you do not doubt our work and experience, we must mention that Teens with a Purpose was formed in 1996 by Deirdre Love. In 2007, Teens with a Purpose became TWP-The Youth Movement a 501(c) (3) non-profit youth development organization. Our goal in HIP Terns is to help develop & support young leaders, especially those from the St. Community Outreach Programs for Youth.

Peer Educator Training Program. Peer Educator Training & training programs for youth educators on various issues that teens face such as HIV/AIDS, Violence, Diversity, and Conflict Resolution.

Training is provided by Teens With a Purpose, the AIDS Resource Center, a division of Eastern Virginia Medical School, Virginia Health Department, Garden of Hope and other organizations and agencies. We use evidence-base curriculums such as Choose Respect, SafeDates, Yes! Dare to Dream curriculums, Sistah2Sistah and many others. As the youth grow and mature, they have the opportunity to advance in the organization. Organizational levels include: FOOT SOLDIERS (Ages 12-18) New members attend weekly meetings and distribute literature about events. PEER LEADERS-IN-TRAINING (Ages 13-18) Attend weekly meetings; attend at least one of the quarterly peer leader trainings; and assist with events.

They do a variety of activities for youth and teenagers development. The best part about these training programs is that they are conducted for the youths and teenagers. If the youth of today is taught the value of hard work and working for the community then once they grow up as adults, they would be able to carry out long term projects which would help the community as whole and make this world a better place to live in.

One such project which was done by the teen with a purpose was planting the seeds of love. As the name suggest it not only promoted harvesting and provided produce to local families but also promoted love and taught the teens to work together as a team and foster team work which leads to synergy and optimum results. For Freedoms is a national civic engagement initiative that aims to model how art and discourse can urge communities into greater civic action and participation. For Freedoms is working with organizations in all 50 states leading up to the mid-term elections in November. Two of the main initiatives of the project were Town Halls and billboard campaigns.

A series of workshops were held at TWP. FOR FREEDOMS BILLBOARD For Freedoms activations invite artists to use the tools of politics and advertising to encourage civic engagement. FOR FREEDOMS TOWN HALL For Freedoms Town Halls are forums for inclusive public conversations that are artist-led can be inspired by one of the Four Freedoms (fear, speech, want or worship), welcome many kinds of voices and points of view and provoke active, critical listening. Camps focus on building teen peer leaders and include physical activities and sessions related to personal growth, life skills, self-esteem, financial education, career exploration, and character building exercises. HealthE=Healthy Living and Exercise – Four key programs encourage appreciation for physical health, social and emotional development.

Teen Camps – Held in the spring and summer, Teen Camps are facilitated by teens and young adults under professional supervision. Teen Camps teach leadership skills and foster personal development regarding such matters as self-esteem, goal setting, and self-discipline. Contemporary topics are addressed, such as bullying, STDs and HIV/AIDS awareness, nutrition, and other relevant topics.
