The Lazy Mom's Guide to Homemade Baby Food : Advice Smackdown : Alpha Mom™ Air Force to Blast Pollution With Dummy Bombs | Jonathan Bardelline on GreenBiz.com. A possible solution to contaminated water under a Utah Air Force base has been falling out of the sky for years. At the Utah Test and Training Range in the state's West Desert, the Air Force practices dropping fake iron bombs. The Air Force is also dealing with how to clean up the groundwater underneath the base, which contains the possible carcinogen trichloroethene (TCE).

Because of the contamination, the area has been a U.S. EPA Superfund site since 1987. Iron strips TCE from water, so the Air Force bought a machine to crush up its piles of dummy bombs into small granules (right) and use the iron as a water filter. Officials plan to drill eight 12-inch bore holes 56 feet into the earth near the base boundary and fill the holes with iron grains from the dummy bombs. This is the first time dummy bombs have been enlisted to clean up the environment, and if the test is successful, the use of iron bombs will expand at the Utah site and could be used in other U.S. Via Deseret News. 3 Eco-Friendly Baby Wipe Choices.

Email Diapers are usually given the most attention and thought when it comes to greening baby’s changing regime. But baby wipes are equally important in terms of caring for baby and the health of the planet. Most disposable baby wipes contain alcohol and potent perfumes that can be very irritating to a baby’s delicate bottom. Many brands of baby wipes are also saturated in liquid solutions which leave excessive moisture on baby’s bum… and where there’s moisture, diaper rashes may soon follow.

Here are 3 great, eco-friendly choices of baby wipes, which will be kind to your baby and easier on the earth. 1) Disposable Wipe RecommendationSeventh Generation Baby Wipes Seventh Generation baby wipes contain a soothing combination of aloe vera and Vitamin E lotion. . + Best deal: Buy in bulk on Amazon.com – $41.99/12 packs 2) Disposable Wipe RecommendationNature Babycare Wipes Nature Babycare wipes are also chlorine and alcohol free.

Photo credit: Teens Turning Green My four-month-old daughter is still light years away from preening and plumping her puss in front of the mirror—although you wouldn't know it from the way she cracks up at the "pretty baby in the mirror"—but news that teenage girls across the country are contaminated with toxins found in cosmetics and skincare products doesn't exactly set a mama's heart at ease. Teens Turning Green, on the other hand, does. The powerhouse group of adolescents recruited the help of seven green skincare companies to produce its own line of teen-oriented body products (no parabens, phthalates, or synthetic fragrances, thank you very much).

Teen-tested and -approved, the nine products, which are available at Whole Foods stores nationwide, are specially formulated for hormone-wrecked, pimple-prone skin, so you can channel all that Robert Pattinson-worshiping angst somewhere else. View 3 photos » Pam Davis poses with some of the eco-friendly, organic, items she sells on her website www.ourgreenhouse.com in her warehouse facility in Monroe, Conn., Wednesday, April 1.

Jessica Hill, Associated Press When Pamela Davis was pregnant with her daughter Meaghan, she started to worry about contamination from the lead paint in her Hoboken, N.J., row house. Then she started reading about chemicals in plastic toys and baby clothes treated with flame-retardant. Soon her entire nursery seemed to pose some mysterious threat to her impending bundle of joy. She was surrounded. "Once you're aware of one thing it just spreads and you start questioning everything," she said.

Davis' predicament is familiar to many expecting parents. A green baby industry has sprung up in the last decade to cater to like-minded parents looking for products that are safe for kids and gentle on the Earth. Congress recently imposed tough standards for phthalates in products for children 12 and under. DIY: Natural Easter Egg Dye Recipes. Email My childhood is full of memories of my mother saving dried onion skins and garden plants as dye for her wool and handspun yarns. Thrifty, resourceful methods like this were part of our rural farm lifestyle.

Needless to say, I was pretty impressed to come across some great natural egg dyeing recipes using onion skins and other plant-based materials via craft maven, Martha Stewart. Her simple, non-toxic recipes use household ingredients such as fresh beets, pre-boiled red cabbage, spinach, coffee, and turmeric. Home-brewed concoctions like this are an eco friendly way to get just the right ‘au natural’ tint to your holiday eggs.

Image from Hella Jongerius In response to concerns about child labour and working conditions, Ikea set up its Ikea Social Initiative with UNICEF almost ten years ago. Its focus was development, health and education in the eastern area of India, with a particular emphasis on getting village women to work. Initially they sent designers to work with some of the women involved in the project and they developed products such as cushion covers and vases. Now they have a new product--wall hangings--designed by Dutch design Hella Jongerius and produced by 200 Indian women.

Called Pelle, Mikkel and Gullspira, the textiles feature a goat, a fox and a rabbit; inspired by animals found in Swedish fairy tales. Since IKEA is a Swedish company and Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm are known world-wide, this gave the hangings a more global appeal. They are made from a mix of woollen felt, and printed cotton, embroidered and stitched together by hand. Image from erbutler.com. Kirstins Inner Circle. Pangea Organics. Steps Towards a More Sustainable Life of Less | Zen Habits. Post written by Leo Babauta. Follow me on Twitter. When my grandparents were young, none of the appliances (let alone hi-tech gadgets) in our homes were in common use — not the refrigerator, electric stove, dishwasher, washing machine, dryer, toaster, television, computer, air-conditioner, microwave, etc.

None of it. They had cars, but they walked far more often than we do today. And while the last 70-80 years have advanced our lives in amazing ways, and there’s no doubt that the comfort and convenience of our lives have improved tremendously … we rarely stop to consider whether technology and consumerism have always changed our lives for the better. I mean, I am as big a proponent of the miracles of the Internet as anyone, but have we given up too much of our lives that used to exist offline and outdoors? I propose a life of less. And yes, some will wonder if that will hurt the economy even more — buying and consuming less will mean people will lose jobs, no? I propose a life of less. About Us. Is your carbon footprint too fat? You're in the right place: EcoStiletto dishes out daily eco-friendly fashion, beauty, lifestyle and celebrity advice that can help shrink your carbon footprint from a ginormous boot into an oh-so-slender stiletto. But back up a minute: Just what is a carbon footprint, anyway? In a nutshell, it's basically a way to calculate the amount of non-renewable energy it takes to support your lifestyle. Leading climatologists say we need to reduce this kind of energy use by at least 50% to fight global warming. So if you drive a gigantic car and leave your lights on all day, your carbon footprint would be calculated somewhere along the lines of an Ugg boot.

It is nearly impossible these days to grab a simple ice cream cone that doesn’t contain a whole lab’s worth of multi-syllabic ingredients. So when I got wind of Haagen-Dazs five, just in time for the beginning of Ice Cream Season ’09, I was absolutely ecstatic. Five as in, only five natural ingredients: Skim milk, cream, egg yolks, sugar and the individual flavor. Proof that if you start with high-quality ingredients in your food, you don’t have to muck it up with garbage.

Go HD! I’m still a fan of basic flavors (oh man, Haagen-Dazs does the best vanilla) but I’m totally looking forward to checking out funkier ones like passion fruit, ginger and brown sugar. Or hey, why not try all seven. Total, that’s still only 11 ingredients. Find Haagen-Dazs Five pretty much everywhere, or check out the store finder on the Haagen-Dazs website. [thanks jee!]
