This past weekend, San Francisco and Oakland played host to the Folsom Street Fair, a Superhero Street Fair, the EatReal Festival, Chinatown's Autumn Moon Festival, the Pacific Pinball Expo, the Steamroller Printing Festival, a Latino Film Festival, and so much more.
And what did I do? Let's see… I hit my favorite thrift stores, went to the pool, went to the grocery store, went to the Japanese grocery store and the Japanese dollar store, read the Noma cookbook, watched Mean Girls (still so good), went to the pool, walked by the Folsom Street Fair, took the dogs I was dogsitting to the park, and overall, had a damn good time. But certainly not a fabulous, high-falutin', big city time. Nothing I did really required a city, except maybe my visit to Japantown, though I've been pleasantly surprised by the amount of small towns and suburbs that have amazing international stores.

Trethewey, Eric Peter Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1943, Eric "Rick" Peter Trethewey hitchhiked, at seventeen, to Kentucky State College after being awarded a full scholarship for track & field.Rick was a great sampler of life, and his unofficial resume includes his work as lead singer of a band, songwriter and guitarist, reporter, longshoreman, and Louisiana Golden Gloves boxer--a light heavy-weight who threw a mighty punch.
A veteran of the Royal Canadian Navy, Rick's sense of mirth existed tenuously, a slight notch above his profound sense of the necessity for righting wrongs. All of his life experiences richly influenced his well-respected poems, essays, and stories. Along with his winsome smile, his adventures and his telling of them made him a much-admired and revered Professor of English at Hollins University for nearly three decades. Rick earned his B.A. from Kentucky State College, his M.A. from the University of New Orleans, and his Ph.D. from Tulane University.

Guerrilla Playhouse is an exciting new theatrical performance/live music revue which takes place every second Sunday at 8PM at Studio Roanoke. Here are a few guidelines to help you figure out the sort of writing we're looking for. On the mechanical side of things, we're looking for original work between 20 and 45 minutes in length. What We Are Not Looking For:Work that does not challenge the audience or could be performed for a general audience. NO: A man meets a woman and must overcome his biases in order to make their relationship work. NO: An American G.I. falls in love with with a Parisian girl during World War 2.

This past weekend was mine and Ron’s 11th anniversary and it also happened that I was scheduled to be a writer guest at ShevaCon, in Roanoke, VA. So for us, it ended up being a fun weekend away where we got to celebrate 11 wonderful years together and make many new friends in the process. This was the first time either of us had ever attended ShevaCon, but we’re very glad we did.
